Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Hi,

I recently acquired a sony vaio S-series vpcse17gg laptop which had windows 7 pro 64-bit already on it. I was told that this is the factory settings.

However, the recovery discs that came with it is only for 32-bit. I tried reformating without the disc using the in-built recovery but it was also 32-bit.

Any idea how I can get it back to 64-bit. Is there anything in the system that I have to extract? Or can I download win 7 pro 64-bit from somewhere and use the same product key that is being used for my current 32-bit?

Right now my system is running on win 7 pro 32-bit after I reformatted it.

Did you buy it NEW? If not then someone changed the OS from 32bit to 64bit. Your best bet is to contact Sony and see if you can get a Real Sony Win 7 64bit reinstall DVD.

If you don't have more then 4GBs of RAM installed then I wouldn't worry about it. If there is more then 4 GBs of RAM then you really need to be running the 64bit version to use all the RAM.

edwar - yes i bought it new months ago... i check the specs for this model online and it does indeed comes with the 64-bit installed but only with the 32-bit disc. Someone helped me did a reformat to factory settings before and it came out 64-bit (but i cannot locate him now haha). And yes.. i have a 8GB Ram.. thz for the info...

There should be a Utility on in the system to create a set of System Discs, which may very well include the 64bit version of the OS. Now that the system has been restored once that utility may not work but if you still have the factory Recovery partition it should contain a .wim file that is the 64bit version of the OS. you can convert a .wim file into a work .ISO file so you can make a 64bit DVD or USB thumb of the OS.

a (DOT).wim file is the MS version of an ISO file. it is a compressed file containing all the install files for Win 7. MS does not like to use industry standards. So they create their own file format for certain thing.

A Google search for WIM file would give you more info then you could ever need.

It should be in the Recovery partition that was created by the manufacture. You may have to boot the system from some type of utility program as sometime these recovery partitions are hidden from the Windows OS. Then again you may not. It may be displayed in Win Explorer.

Open Disk Management and post a screen shot of the full DM window.

It may be too late but try making the Sony Vaio Recovery disks now to see what options they present: How to create a set of Recovery Discs.

Otherwise you can order Recovery disks from Sony, or get the recommended Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Read the Special Note for Sony Owners at end to understand special steps required to get all Sony features to work.
