Solved Windows 7 Professional "Validation Errors"

Hello everyone!

Today I'm going to ask for some help regarding random validation errors on a brand new Windows 7 install. I received this version of Windows 7 through my school's Dreamspark webstore, downloaded it and burnt it to a DVD. I ran the install to which it provided a list of Windows 7 versions I could choose from. I believe I chose Windows 7 Professional, (without anything else after it).

Once the install completed, which was perfectly fine, I attempted to open up Internet Explorer and that's when I started getting the Validation Errors. I will get them opening just about anything and they simply will not go away.

I've narrowed it down to it likely being a Debug/Checked build of Windows 7, and I've noticed several people that I've googled regarding this problem have downloaded their copy via MSDN, Dreamspark, what-have-you. The difference with them is they state their download specifically said "Debug/Checked" after it, but looking back at my order, it does not for me.

I admit I am not home right now to do anything but I wanted to get a thread going to see if anyone had any insight. The previous thread I linked to has a link to the MGADiag.exe which I will run when I get home to see if anything on there tells me what version I do have and where the issues might be.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Above is the information requested. As mentioned in the OP, I got this off of Dreamspark so I do not have a COA.

To add, now that I'm on this computer again, I notice the desktop has at the bottom right-hand corner the following information:

Windows 7
Build 7601
C:\Windows

... I could be going crazy but I don't remember any 'normal' installs of any Windows version, (that wasn't a server edition or some sort), wouldn't have this type of information. Further making me believe the copy of Windows I have is different than the "standard" one that a normal computer user would receive. I just don't understand why the only one in Dreamspark says as in the OP, but yet it points to all evidence that this is some sort of Build/Checked version.

There is no problem with your MGADiag report - That label in the second quote is simply the version tag, and not a notification. It nay be that DreamSpark disks are coded to show that (but I can't remember how to switch it off, offhand)

As to validation, try installing KB971033, and then doing validation using Internet Explorer, at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate

The update you requested I download states that "The update is not applicable to your computer". I ensured that I am running Windows 7 64 bit and that I selected the 64 bit version from the page.

For kicks, I went to the validation page and tried to download and install that and it too said "This update is not applicable to your computer." I went to Windows Updates and it said I was completely up to date, which must be false since this is a completely brand new install. Absolutely the only thing I have done since the Windows installation finished was install wireless card drivers so that I could connect to the internet. I did this AFTER I started receiving the validation errors, which occurred immediately after starting Windows for the first time.

Let me know what I should do at this point.

Very strange - what Security software have you installed?


Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your reply - also post a new MGADiag report.

I had some hope because I hadn't seen a validation error in a couple of reboots and they no longer pop up when you first start IE, (which it had previously). Although I did not have security when you asked, (I literally only installed the wireless driver I mentioned... absolutely nothing else), but I decided since I wasn't getting validation errors I could start downloading stuff, (this is after running checkdisk and sfc).

As soon as I went to google to search for Microsoft Security Essentials, a ton of validation errors occurred again and it crashed IE.

I am attaching the CBS log file. What does this log file represent? I removed everything before 4/29/2015 because there was some major hardware changes before then and I'm uncertain when changes occurred. I'm comfortable with the hardware that is in there now, (I hope), and everything is working fine except for these validation errors and the fact that Windows updates doesn't seem to want to do anything. If you think it'd still be helpful to have all the back-stuff I can put it back in but I removed it to save some kilos. And I assumed you said to compress since you might've expected it to be big but it was under a meg so I didn't feel the need. If I need to do that regardless, I apologize and I will reattach.

So currently I'm back where I was yesterday. Validation errors are CURRENTLY limited to internet explorer. I was just able to browse through Windows Explorer without issue, and of course since nothing else is on the computer I haven't done anything else. I might play around with built-in apps like calculator and what-not to see if I trigger validation errors anyway else.

OK... stupid CBS file would freeze internet explorer when trying to upload and post a reply. Then I thought installing Google Chrome, (since it's the preferred browser for me anyway), might give me better luck but I can't get to ANY website with that, (it just spins around).

I finally got the CBS file on a different computer and am uploading it that way.

I should mention the 'slowness' of the computer is likely caused by only 2GB of memory. I have other sticks but this is the only one I can get to work without giving me memory errors so until I can fix the rest of my problems I'm stuck with such a low amount of memory... but I'll get some ordered.

*sigh* This is getting frustrating. I'm good at troubleshooting computer issues but this one is absolutely stumping me.

Let me know what I should do next. As always, thank you for your help.

There are no problems in the SFC log - or in the background CBS data.
Please try installing KB971033 again.
If it fails, run the CheckSUR tool and post the CheckSUR.log file Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool
If it goes in, post an MGADiag report.

Hello! Thank you again for all of your help. As I had first suspected the issue was that I did indeed have a Debug/Checked build. I thought the DVD I had was the same I had used previously without these issues and I was wrong. Anyway I have downloaded and installed the appropriate version and all of my issues seem to have been fixed.
