I just purchased a Dell laptop and I’m using Windows 7. Since purchasing it I had an IT friend do some windows updates and he set up a profile. Later when I brought the laptop home for the first time I get this message when I turn it on, “the user profile service failed the logon”. It gives me only a button that says “OK”. When I click that it says the user profile cannot be found. Upon start up I have tried clicking the F8 button but it doesn’t do anything. I am not computer savvy at all and I don’t know what to do with this really cool new computer that I can’t use. :(

I can see your not exactly tech savvy, but I'll see if I can help. I see you have a Vostro. Same here. Did it come with a Windows 7 CD? I might be able to help you do a repair install, or wost case scenario a clean install. Also, Dells tech support can be annoying but when you get the right person they can be really helpful. If I can't get your problem sorted out, you can give them a try.

Thanks for responding, Petey7! The cd is labeled, “reinstallation dvd windows 7 home premium 32 bit”. Should I use this to try and reinstall Windows 7?

Howling Wolves, does it matter that I’m using Windows 7, now Vista?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Windows 7 and Vista have more in common with each other than either have with any other version of Windows. Most fixes for Vista will work with 7.

For doing the repair install insert the disc, then cut off the computer. Restart the computer. Go in to BIOS by taping F2. You should be able to find an option called boot order along with instructions on how to change boot order. Make DVD/CD-ROM drive the first one on the list. When you exit BIOS (usually with the Esc key) it should boot from the DVD. You should be able to find an option called Repair install or something similar. I'm trying to find a good tutorial for you, but its not all that hard in my opinion. If you want, I will help you through it step by step. Just let me know when you want to start, and wait for my response.

I coulldn't find instructions online so I booted from my 7 disc to figure it out.

1)boot from dvd
2)select language
3)click "repair my computer"
4) select operating system/installation
5)the repair console will search for problems and attempt to fix them
6) if given a list of choices, do startup repair, or what ever makes the most sense.

If that fails, and you can find your driver cd/dvd that came with the computer, you can boot from the disc again and do a clean install. Things might look different, as Dell likes to play with a few settings before shipping out computers. Here is a link that explains how to do a clean install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

I had to step out for a bit and in the meantime my 18 yo son was able to get the laptop in safe mode but pressing the F8key upon start up. Is this helpful or should I continue to reinstall Windows 7 using the cd?

I good is your 18 yr old with computers? If you trust him with computers, you might want to have him help you. To save time, try the steps in the link howling wolves posted. If that fails, we can go back to what I was recommending.
