Windows 7 program updates

Is there a service of some kind in Windows 7 that automatically goes out and checks to see if there is a newer version of a program being launched?

If so, I find it annoying and would like to turn it off. If such a service exists, how would I turn it off?

The only service is updates. Type updates in search by start button. Go to updates and change settings.

Thanks! It must be feature of the indivdual programs that I'll have to turn off in those programs. It seems so widespread that I thought it must be a new feature in 7 to go out and check for newer versions of programs.

Windows update checks for updates for the OS from MS and updates for other MS programs, such as Office, etc.

a lot of software does indeed check for a new version at startup.

as you guessed, this is not windows doing this - you'll need to look at each program's options/preferences to turn it off if you don't find it a useful feature.

It doesn't need to run at startup ... it can be run manually.
