Windows 7 random slowdown...

Hi, I am new to this forum, and I basically joined so I could maybe get some help with a big issue I am having. My computer runs windows 7 great, but very randomly my computer will slow down incredibly, almost totally unresponsive and I have to shut it off. When I reboot, it takes forever to get to the login screen. When I finally do get to log in, it takes about 10 minutes to get to the desktop. When the desktop finally loads up, it is not only still going rediculously slow, but it has reverted to a classic theme, with no sound options. It has done this about 3 times now, and I have figured out how to fix it at least temporarily by doing a system restore to the last update, reinstall the update and restart, this usually brings it back to normal. I know this has to be a windows 7 issue because I used to have Vista, with no problems at all. And my computer is definatly fast enough to handle windows 7, as nothing is lower than 5.9 in my system score. I haven't been able to find this issue anywhere on the internet, so if someone could help me, that would be fantastic! :)

P.S. I am using 64 bit, don't know if that matters.

update

My specs are updated, I would have had them before the post, but I had to use my other computer to post the thread, as my computer had the problem I mention. I have it back to normal now.

I use applications like steam, xfire, photoshop, bitdefender, firefox. those are the main programs I use. The first time it happened I was using Abelton live 8 recording software with line 6 gearbox. So naturally I thought that was the problem, but it happened again for really no reason. I have a theory that it might be my hard drive, but I can't really prove it since it works fine most of the time. My hard drive is just the standard 7200 rpm one that came with the computer.

bit defender is still not completely compatible with windows 7 so that could cause the problem...

It started before I started using Bit defender, bit defender actually works great, its really strange, idk what it is that's causing the problem. I've been thinking it might be a hardware issue, like my hard drive, but my computer runs flawlessly 95% of the time, it's just randomly it will decide to do this, it has always been soon after a major update to windows 7, that might be it... but why would it only happen to my computer?

Some days ago my computer suddenly hanged so I restarted it but still soon after win7 boots up, it hanged again.
I tried to open it in safe mode but same issue.I was also using those updates.
So
I open task manager and found that explorer.exe is using 99% of cpu for some unknown reason.

I was unable to fix it so I reinstalled win 7.
