Hi Guys,

I bought a Sony Vaio (VPCEH) pre loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium a few years back and it recently had a HDD failure so I bought a new one and installed. The laptop didnt come with a disk copy of Windows 7, just the recovery partition on the HDD. Managed to get a vanilla copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and install that with the Key that came with the laptop. 90 days later, Windows said that it wasnt activated. Long story short, the Cert of Authenticity Licence Key isnt from Microsoft, but one Sony uses, although Microsoft have said that the key is genuine, Id have to contact Sony. Been in touch and they put me in touch with a supplier for the correct version of Windows for my machine, but they no longer stock it. So, bit stuck on my options.

All I can think is that I will need to buy a new key.

Do you guys know if I can still get Windows 10 upgrade with what is effectively a trail copy of Windows 7.

Any help appreciated..

Ian

Looks to me like you reinstalled WIndows using a retail disk or download, rather than the Sony recovery media.
To be able to do that, you MUST use the Product Key from the COA sticker, and not the one found using any kind of 'Keyfinder' application/program.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

If there is no COA sticker on the case, then as far as MS is concerned, the computer is not licensed to run Windows.

You may be able to buy a set of Recovery media from Sony which should work (the SLIC table appears to be present and correct so should activate the Sony Key properly when it's used with the correct installation media)
