Windows 7 Re-install - HD Driver?

Hello All,

I am trying to reinstall my version of Windows 7 Pro x64. There is no OS listed in the system recovery tools. It tells me to "click Load Drivers and then install drivers for your hard disks".

I am not sure what driver I am supposed to have, or where to find it. My hard drive is a WD Caviar Black. Product # WD1002FAEX.

I am trying to follow a tutorial from these forums about SATA drives and installing the driver. I went to the intel download center and got the install file for the latest driver. But how am I supposed to use this file with my other computer. I cannot get into windows to install it.

So how am I supposed to install this driver? Or where do I find the current driver?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dan

You have the right driver, but you'll need to extract it and save it to a flash drive so you can access it during the install. However, before you do all of that, you might have something else wrong, like an incorrect BIOS setting for the controller. Intel chipsets don't need any extra drivers loaded in order to see SATA drivs.

The computer is currently in the process of running Startup Repair. It doesn't seem to fix anything. My windows will not boot properly so I want to reinstall it.

Where is the controller setting located in the BIOS? I do not understand why the drive cannot be located. It was functioning properly until yesterday, and then everything went haywire.

I had that exact same problem once. In fact it was with the exact same drive, a WD1002FAEX. Whatever you try won't work. What I did, is once you get to the 'where go you want to install windows' screen, iqnore the load drivers message. click on advanced options and click on format. Once I did that it was smooth sailing. It installed with no problems. I hope that works for you.

Where is the controller setting located in the BIOS?
You'd have to answer that, by going into your BIOS and checking. I was referring to setting the controller to RAID might require a driver, but IDE/SATA/AHCI shouldn't with Windows 7. Is the drive still detected in the BIOS?

Yes it is located in BIOS.

And I cannot get to the screen where I select where to install windows too. I am trying to overwrite a previous windows 7, but I get errors before I can advance.

I believe that I am going to wipe the HDD.

After two times through the Startup Repair, it seems to have found the operating system. So I am trying a system restore. If that does not work, I will try to wipe everything.

if you still have problems, make sure the driver you downloaded from intel is for "F6 install". the ".exe" version wont work (unless you extract the files from it with 7zip or universal extractor, etc.)

I went ahead and wiped the drive. So this matter can be considered closed. Thanks for the advice.
