We have a recent HP laptop that crashed, ironically right after Norton expired! Trying to re-install after nothing else helped. It asks for an installation disk but I don't remember if the computer came with one and with recent renovations it's a daunting task to look. Can I download or /etc a disk to rev it up?

There is a product key on the bottom of the computer.

Anyone happen to know if the 300 dollar-ish HP with Windows 7 Home premium from Walmart comes with a start up disk?

Which model ?
There may (actually should ) be a restore partition on the hard drive, to access it you will need to press a specific key during boot up.
Often they will not provide an installtion disc, the instructions advise that you make a restore DVD immediately the first set up is performed.

If push comes to shove you can buy a restoration DVD from HP for your specific model.

If you post the model number there may be something you can do.

You can try disinfecting and then repairing Startup: Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot - Windows 7 Forums

Or you can try running Factory Recovery from its partition at boot: HP Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Or you can order factory Recovery Disks from HP, if you need or want the preinstalled factory software which came with machine.

If not you can get the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything you need is in link.

I couldn't get to safe mode. Startup repair was an endless boomerang...

Another user wiped it clean and now I'm at the 'Need installation disk' point so I don't know if any repair options are still possible.

Everything you need is in the Clean Reinstall Factory OEM tutorial I posted above. Did you read it?

I pressed F11, etc.. and I think it is reinstalling now. The other user may have uninstalled with an old school method.

I did go to that one and was confused. From

'the latest official Win7 installer ISO with SP1 for your licensed version'

they offer win7 home x17's... and I have x16's...

That is only the latest version number, and you need the newer version. Choose Home Premium 32- or 64-bit depending upon what came with your machine or which you prefer based on your specs. If you will post up those specs we can help you decide if you're unsure: 32 bit vs 64 bit Comparison - Windows 7 Forums

Is there a way to tell if you can do a clean install before you try it. I'd like to do it with this computer but the disks that came with it are hours away. Explorer freezes and new version won't install. Chrome isn't bad.

Still wouldn't work... I'm downloading the above to try.

Says I need the installation disk.

I downloaded English x86: X17-58996.iso but don't have room on memory stick for it... not without erasing back up files.

You cannot create a bootable flash stick without formatting it during the process. Move the files off or use a DVD.

Once you have downloaded the latest ISO and written to flash stick or burned to DVD using the tool provided in tutorial, boot it and see how the install proceeds following the steps given. If there is problem post back what happens and the exact error message. We will help you get it installed.
