yes of course..
thats why the technology is there...
gimp (i think, i know for sure photoshop has it...)
has a cache folder (apart from the RAM)
readyboost is a sense a cache file...
where flash is better (in random reads and writes and in non sequential reads and writes...) superfetch uses the flash drive to give a better performance...
(although it doesnt show until you use a demanding application (which is gimp is...)

And what allocation unit size? Will it not effect its speed so much that i should bother?

I think the best is Fat32 formated...i'm pretty sure i saw that, because of the amount of Gb inside the flash card and how it writes inside.

512mb or less needs fat16

1gb to 32gb could be fat32

After it's up to you for protecting files through Ntfs Format or Fat32.

exFat seems not working as i tried on a 160gb to format (by mistake)
so return it to Ntfs..but for another need.

I thought exFAT was for flash drives mainly cause of what wiki said "exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) is a proprietary file system suited especially for flash drives, blah blah blah"

So i figured, if its a file system for flash drives, wouldnt that make better use of readyboost? And as for the allocation unit size, i jsut used the default, 32 kilobytes. Seems to work fine.

I dont think i would try running my main harddrive on it though..

Using a 16GB class 6 SDHC for my readyboost, 2 gigs of it with build 7127 and exfat formatted memorycard it works very well on my HTC SHIFT with only 1 gig ram.

Correct me if I'm wrong but.. isn't this idea a little pointless? Ram sticks are cheaper and vastly more effective. Why bother with a slow USB when you can have actual RAM..?

Exactly!! the idea is for systems with less than 1gb ram. All those saying they have 4gb + DON'T need readyboost. it's like putting your page file in it's own partition (preferably on a seperate drive) and setting it at a stagnant size of 2.5 x system ram (ie: 512mb of ram, set page file to 1024mb). then you see a little better performance but relying an a USB thumb drive will give very little noticeable performance increase unless ur low on RAM (eg: 1gb or less)

welll I just put in my new 2 gig flash usb, laptop has 1 gig ram and is struggling, however I had to enable superfetch and superfetch is now thrashing the hdd , or is it copying contents of swap to my usb flash?

does that mean usb drives are faster than hard drives?

if so, why aren't we all installing software and even operating systems onto usb drives?

would i really notice a benefit by permanently sticking in a usb drive, and installing big games onto it - will they load faster than from my hard drive?

or is this a really dumb idea, and i missed something obvious?

USB drives have poor sequential speeds, but better random access in certain conditions. So in general, except for very tiny files, HDDs are much faster.

From what I've read though, ReadyBoost doesn't help unless you have anemic levels of RAM.

just installed win7 onto 1 gig ram old laptop, and i thought i would do some research on readyboost, which led me here...then i got thinking about relative drive speeds...

anyway, real ram is real cheap, so i guess i will go and buy some and forget about readyboost altogether!

Readyboost is in the same place,,Put in your usb drive and right click on it . go to properties and sellect readyboost..Windows Vista 64 made some differance but Windows 7 64 i haven't really noticed much difference. Windows 7 boots fast anyway. 2GB usb drive .I think i will find a larger usb drive for 7.

i have just installed windows 7 home premium on my laptop that came with starter version.

ready boost will not work!

i have tried reformatting the memory to the exfat, etc.

i can select the memory for readyboost, but it does not work. the system is not recognizing the memory to use it.


can anyone help with this please?

Try fat 32 re-format.

no go. i can go to properties/readyboost/ then issue the memeory, but the system is not recognizing it! :/

frustrating.


any other ideas?
