Windows 7 "Remove from this list" not populating.

Hello, :D

My problem is that I removed Firefox by mistake from my Recent Programs by selecting "Remove from this list" so I just wanted to reset the Recent Programs list to make it start logging my most used programs again so...

What I did was to right click the Start Menu, click Properties and uncheck "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu", then I checked it again and the result was a blank list... but when the list started populating again all the programs that I had ignored in the past still don't show up (including Firefox).

I've tried everything without success, so maybe someone can tell me where the blacklisted programs are stored? Maybe a file needs to be deleted or a registry key?

From what I've been investigating it's not in the registry. It has nothing to do with "UserAssist" or any other registry key I've found. I have a program called User Assist View and I can confirm UserAssist is logging Firefox each time I open it, it's even my most used program but it still doesn't show up in the Start menu.

It has nothing to do with "automaticDestinations-ms" files or any file from %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent.

Oh and I don't want to pin Firefox to the Start menu, just to reset the recent programs logging.

I use Windows 7 Ultimate, 32Bit.

Thanks.

Don't forget that Windows can only display a specific of number of programs that have been recently launched (the default is six) so it's entirely possible that Firefox won't be shown there for a number of days after that feature has been reset.

If you increase the number of programs displayed there (say, from six to ten) Firefox may appear.

To increase the number of programs listed, right-click the Start orb & choose "Properties".
Under the "Start Menu" tab click "Customise"

At the bottom of the box you'll see "Start menu size" and a spinner to change the number.

Yeah, I have it set to 9 but I already cleared the list doing this: "click Properties and uncheck "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu", then I checked it again and the result was a blank list"

So I tought that would reset the recent programs logging but when the list started populating again the ignored programs were still ignored

So how would you go about making Win7 start logging ignored programs again???

So... FF and other removed programs just appeared in one of my computers and I'm sure they will appear in other one very soon.

I just gave them some time to appear again (one month ).

I knew it was going to happen just like MS website said but that is far from being a solution, anyways thanks for the help I just gave up on this one. But feel free to post a solution if you ever find it.

Thanks. :)

It seems to be related as much to the count# as the date's, no evidence of a blacklist being employed (I monitored FS/Reg + Process/Thread activity whilst removing recently accessed programs, and found....)

  1. Removing and "re-adding" (by accessing, NOT pinning) with Synergy, charmap ... other regularly accessed, regular start menu links: Re-appeared instantly
  2. sandboxie link behaved also as expected (already listed as recently-added, removing from list, then opening from Sandboxie Start Menu folder re-added...
  3. Exceptions: control panel applets are "children" (like documents) of control panel - so don't look for diskmgmt!
  4. UPDATE: At first I thought new (first-run) entries didn't have a high-enough (MRU)runcount, hence they're not being appended.. tried again with a FILE shortcut (to "Electric sheep" screensaver's settings @ "C:\Program Files (x86)\Screensavers\Electric Sheep\SettingsGUI.exe") - this worked
  5. Perhaps (if you're PINNED # is too high) there's no room for more entries (this is a factor) - the imposed (application pin) maximum can be overrideen, but seems to still be restricted by some upper-limit (may be related to pixel estate; specifically, how many entries can fit vertically on your primary display)
  6. If you're running an exectuable, non-installed app (as oppose to accessing start menu links) this probably won't work (just stick some links in ya start menu)

Check out Nirsooft's userassistview, I think the count's may help decide (I'm guessing).

also, re pinned objects and automaticdestinations, you can monitor (folder) changes using this
