Is there any way to do a windows repair from the dvd like in windows xp, so that it will basically do a fresh install of windows over your programs so everything stays intact? I know doing an "upgrade" with the same os will do just that but every time i try that option from the dvd it says it has to be run from windows. but if i could boot windows i wouldnt be needing to do the repair in the first place. is there any way possible or am i out of luck?

Ah sorry. I missed that you couldn't boot. Perhaps someone else will have a better idea.

my real issue is atipcie.sys......i can not boot into windows it hangs at the splash screen. in safe mode it just hangs on that file. i have renamed the file .old, same result. i also replaced the file with one from a working machine and no go either. if it was windows xp, i would boot from the cd, let it find the xp install and repair it doing a fresh install over the top of the program files, and user profiles.

Repair Install has been replaced at boot with fully automated Startup Repair which is best run from the DVD Repair console or System Repair Disk.

It should automate System Restore, Disk Check, SYstem File Checker and all other tests and fixes.

If it doesn't help after running a few times, then manually boot back into System Recovery Options to run System Restore to get before the failure.

startup repair finds problems but it says it cant fix them, big shocker there. no system restore points. i was just wondering if theres any repair option like in xp. i dont really care, its not my pc =) im just a tech. and i have never found a way to do what i was looking to do, and wanted to ask around just to make sur ei wasnt missing anything. looks like they are gonna get a fresh install. not my problem they have no restore points, or were not running av. malwarebytes has found 40 things so far with it scanning on ym workstation, but i have my doubts it will boot after cleaned. if so cool, if not, sucks to be them =)

If you're a tech then you should know that since Vista the Repair Install is done from the desktop in the in-place Upgrade environment, an upgrade over itself.

With that level of infection a clean reinstall is best anyway. Here's how to get it perfect: Reinstalling Windows 7
