Windows 7 ROCKS!!! Eat that APPLE!!

I used to run Vista on the Machine in my specs, and for the most part it ran ok. It was frustrating only in that it would lock up numerous times a day.. Just sit there for sometimes 10-30 seconds like it was trying to figure out it's next move. I could move the mouse, but I could not click on things. If I did, I could no longer move the mouse, and then all of a sudden, it would wake up and start working again. As I said, this happened pretty often. The rest of the time, it ran great.

Now, with Windows 7, this is a complete non-issue... I feel sorry for a friend who just threw down the dough on a Mac. This OS is going to be epic once it hits the mainstream..

vista was bad

Let's stop the Vista bashing, sure. But once you drive the model the way it was meant to be, you realise, Vista was bad. We just need to face that fact. Sure it was much better than XP in many ways and don't mention ME. (as that was a joke)

Vista tried too much and was an arrogant attempt by MS to shove crap down our throats and that is the way it will be remembered. However, we love Windows 7 and they made up for it. However they left us a bit cold as far as Ultimate and pricing goes, especially in Oz. We might be 22 Million people but represent a big market per capital for them and Sydney is still a very significant city by world standards with over 4 mill. (would be in the top 10 if US so I heard)

... just remember that without Vista, Windows 7 would never have been.

I hung onto Windows 2000 until I had to upgrade to get some newer programs to run.

W2K was a great foundation for WinXP
Vista is a great foundation for Win 7. There are many games for W2K that stopped working under WinXP due to driver issues and I could run those old games again in Vista

Why do people love to hate vista? I never had any problems with it and found it to be much better looking and faster than xp, not to mention I never got a single virus using vista x64. I guess not everyone can afford decent hardware if thats whats restricting your using vista? But I can't see the point in slating something just becausce your out of date PC wont run it. Its like someone saying they hate mercedes benz becausce they drive a Ford Escort! Total rubbish.

If you have problems using windows vista maybe you shouldn't be using a pc...

The reason was fairly obvious -- when VISTA was released the hardware most people were using wouldn't really run VISTA very well -- and of course there was that AWFUL problem of the Disks thrashing about for AGES and AGES (Disk light solid on) which meant that in a lot of cases it actually took MINUTES after boot up to be able to do ANYTHING on the computer.

Drivers weren't really an issue - this was just an excuse. For hardware in general use at the time Vista was introduced there was NO reason for 99% of typical users to switch from XP to VISTA.

I still know people using Windows 98 quite happily -- all they want is some basic office app like Word (the simple versions), email and a browser. Win 98 will run this quite OK.



Of course with the latest service packs and modern hardware VISTA will run just fine -- I still prefer W7 anyday and it will run on much leaner hardware than vista will. It will run also quite happily on Netbooks as well (don't even THINK of loading VISTA on to one of those).

There are people however who will just "Bash Vista" for the sake of it and probably have never tried it. On modern hardware they might be quite surprised but with W7 out now there really isn't (IMO) any point.

I agree with Jimbo. Before Windows 7 Beta came out, I was a happy Vista user (with his pros and cons). Vista was surprisingly using all my Quad core processor, thing that XP had never done well. And I'm not mentioned when I had to upgrade to XP x64 when I upgraded my RAM from 2 GB. to 6 GB.!
I think that XP x64 was my worst OS experience in my whole life.
It was so bad that I thought too many times to turn on again my old Pentium 4 and use Windows ME that (highly tweaked) went much better.
So... then I installed Vista x64 (without Service Packs at that time) and everything went fine. I just get errors when I personally commited an error.
Anyway, now that Windows 7 is out, I can't go back to Vista nor XP. But... if for some reason I've to go back, I'll just discard XP on high-end hardware. :huh:
Everything depends on which hardware you have...

i find it interesting that the entire discussion revolves around vista and windows 7, as if nothing else exists outside of microsoft to influences decisions. you really think windows 7 is as good as it is because microsoft just wanted to "do the right thing"? vista was bad because microsoft didn't care, they figured they had the corner on the market and everyone would buy into it because they had to. now, they have something called competition. microsoft is finally getting some heavy enough hitters in the software world to compete with them that they can't just buy up or eat for lunch. google and apple are the biggest reasons why microsoft products are actually REALLY getting better, and better fast. and honestly, it's refreshing and it's about damn time. look at bing, the first microsoft search engine that is actually pretty good. and gee, i wonder why. maybe you should google it?

That's an interesting point nitronate. I do think that competition has been perceived to have increased lately. The actual figures show that, yes competition has increased, but not the astronomical figures that everyone thinks (not including ie). But that doesn't matter, because competition has been perceived to have increased dramatically. So Microsoft is making an effort to show the public, and businesses, that they aren't resting on Vista.
I reckon one of the best changes that has occurred in the time that Vista was released was the shakeup of the development team. Particularly, Steve Sinofsky moving from Office 2007 to President of the Windows and Windows Live divisions. I believe he brought the 'right stuff' to development of Windows 7 - my understanding is that the public Beta and RC release concept were his ideas.

Wow, you really believe Vista was bad because MS didn't care? How old are you, 12? MS poured approximately $6 billion into Vista development, but they didn't really care?:sarc: Let's see, Windows has about 97% of the market share worldwide, what do you think was Vista's competition, Linux, OSX? It was XP, and it's job was to improve upon the things XP did poorly. One of the biggest problems with XP was security and idiot users. That's the unfortunate side effect of having such a large marketshare.

Vista was big update from XP. Not quite a Win 98 to XP, but close. I believe it was rushed out at the end because of the long development time, but if compared to XP it is still far and above a much better OS. The change to the core driver model presented obstacles to vendors, and quite frankly, many of the larger hardware manufacturers were very slow to adapt to Vista. nVidia and Creative come to mind, in particular. They hadn't had to deal with a driver model change for almost 6 years, and were much too complacent. Of course, this is MS's fault somehow.

As far as security went, big changes to the usage model (i.e. UAC) were necessary. The general user does not understand safe computing. I can tell my Dad a hundred times, don't download every malware protection software you see, but if he is cruising a website and a notice pops up that he is infected and AntiVirus 2009 will clean it, he will install the software without thinking. Only after it starts the install does he remember my warning. UAC adds a layer of security. When that jarring secure desktop screen pops up, he actually stos to figure out why. He's even called me to ask what to do before proceeding.

Of course, due to user complaints, UAC has been dumbed down in Win 7, so that it is for the most part useless. But the users are happy.

And to those trying to make the argument that Vista is built on the Win 7 kernel, please stop, you're just embarrassing yourselves. Win 7 is built on Vista (Kernel 6.0). It is a further advancement of the Windows NT kernel.
