Windows 7 Screen/Graphics Error

I recently started up my computer and a weird screen error appeared. Ill try my best to explain it. The screen is split up into 4 sections and its kinda blurry:huh:. Its almost like permanent safe mode. Any ideas?

Right click on the desktop and select screen resolution and see how many monitors are enabled.

I cant, it wont let me select anything or I cannot see what im doing.

Is it actually 4 desktops with taskbars or just your wallpaper tiled. If your selected wallpaper file is a very low resolution, and your monitor a very high resolution, switching from stretched to tiled will cause something like what you describe to happen. You'll be able to tell because you will only have one taskbar, but your wallpaper will repeat in a checker board pattern.

I dont think its the wallpaper as it is split into four sections when I turn on the computer (bios) and stays like it.

If it is from before BIOS it is likely a graphics card error. Do you have another monitor you can try, or another cable to rule out those two?

How big is your monitor-screen size? Make and model might help too. What type of connection are you using, VGA, DVI? Make and model of video card? You should really fill in your system specs. Programs like speccy Speccy - Download can help you sort it out.

No, I havnt got another cable or monitor but I a have added a few pictures.

Can you press the menu button on your monitor, to see if the menu looks normal? If it is normal, it's not a monitor problem, but if it looks the same then it is the monitor hardware.

Yeh the monitors menu is normal

Ok, so that narrows it down to cable (which I suspect based on your images) or graphics card. Are you using onboard graphics or an external card?

I'm using an nVidia GeForce 9800 GT.

Is there a VGA port on your motherboard as well? If there is, try removing your graphics card and using that. If that solves the problem, it was your graphics card. If not, then it is likely your cable.

I tried another monitor that I had packed away and it works fine now. Thanks guys for helping me

Ah, I forgot the port on the monitor, lol. If you like that other monitor better, you could try, say the DVI port if you were using VGA (or vice versa)

Glad it wasn't a costly process, great idea trying another monitor anyway.
