I currently have Windows 7 32bit but i have 8GB Ram and would like to use all of it so i am upgrading to 64bit.

When i put in the 64bit CD I get an error message saying "This Installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select Custom (advanced).

I then restart the computer with the CD in but it does not boot with the CD. I went into the Bio's and made sure it said boot CD as number 1 and it does.

My computer is capable of using a 64bit OS.

I really am not sure what else to do at this point.

EDIT: This problem is fixed! See last page!

Welcome

You must do a clean install if you are going from 32 to 64 bit.

1. Boot the computer from your Windows 7 installation DVD.
NOTE: Make sure that the CD/DVD drive is selected first in the boot order in your BIOS settings. Usually it is by default.

I can't boot Windows 7 CD it says the error message mentioned before and restarting my computer with the CD in doesn't work either, i check the BIOS and i made sure it had the CD ROM to boot first.

Is the disc a burned ISO file or a disc you purchased?

If you do have a DVD drive and not a CDROM drive, then there has to be a problem with the drive, your machine's BIOS settings or the DVD.

A few other things:

Sometimes booting from a CDRW doesn't work as stated in comments here: How to boot from a CD Tech – for Everyone

Your version of Windows cant be upgraded from 32x to 64x and needs a clean install as stated previously by Richc46

Your version of Windows cant be upgraded from premium to ultimate or home to premium etc. you have to upgrade premium to premium. etc.

There are alot of dif. BIOS's there might be another option to disable booting from other devices. <--Edit: Meaning option is to enable/disable booting from other devices than Hard Drive

Snoopy,
Insert your win7 DVD into your optical drive.
SHUTDOWN your computer (do not do a RESTART)
Power your computer back on.

If now your computer does not boot from the DVD, then:
1. the DVD is not a bootable DVD
OR
2. the optical drive is defective
OR
3. then bios is not set to boot first from DVD

The only thing that I would be able to suggest would be to follow Karlsnooks advice. If that does not work, I would take another bootable DVD and see if it works. If it does not it is the drive. If it does it is the DVD. A DVD can be defective, too.

I just tested my Win 7 32bit dvd and it worked just fine. So i guess it's not the drive.
But i also tried to pirate win 7 64bit once and it didn't work either, mabey i burned it wrong? or could it be my BIOS?

I bought this Win 7 64bit in the US while i live in Nederlands so would i now have to pirate it to get 64bit since the CD is defective?

If I were in your situation, I would call MS, explain the situation, tell them that you have a key, but need a DVD. They will probably send one for cost. In the long run it is always best to go through reputable, legit channels.

Agreed, I would call MS. Since this was purchased in US and is being used outside US, there might be a zone restriction on it that is causing the problem.

You have CD-ROM set as first boot device, not the DVD drive.

Try using the one-time Boot menu key given on first bootup screen (usually F10 or F12) to boot the DVD.

Try the DVD in another machine to see if it will boot.

If this is genuine MS intallation DVD then it includes tech support so call the number with the disk. If not reburn the DVD with ImgBurn at 4x speed with Verify - it never fails.

Its a genuine MS CD, this is strange when i put my 32bit win7 in and my computer is on it reads it, 64bit i get the error message, when i try the boot up menu i go to CDROM and for both 32bit and 64bit it says no bootable device found.

This is weird.

Determine where your .iso file is stored by browsing to there.

Now point the flash stick creating tool to that location.

Update.

I still have not managed to install windows 7 64bit but have come up with an idea.

Will it work if i take my HDD out of my computer and bring it to a friends house where we install windows 7 there with his computer?

Thanks.
