Windows 7 shuts down randomly?

Turn off display 10 min

Sleep is 30 min

When i press the power button it shuts down.

Still dont get why it shuts all the way down. ANy ideas?

have you checked you adapter setting...???
do you have it set to awake by keyboard?
it does take the HDDs some time to restart... and come to speed.

Yup. When in hibernation, it powers down almost everything in the computer but keeps power to the RAM so it keeps your session alive. When you hit the power button it powers everything else back up and restores your session without having to 'boot up'.

Actually Hibernation takes a snapshot of what inside the RAM, saves it to the HDD then shuts the whole computer down. No power to anything. But yeah it restores the session before it when into hibernation.

if you're having the same problem as myself and many others then your PC isnt going to sleep or standy or hibernat it SHUTS OFF completely.

randomly.. sometimes every couple of hours, sometimes every few minutes, it shuts down and i have to wait a minute or two or three before i can turn it back on.

when its plugged into the power i usually have the power light on but not in this case, when this happens the light is off, like the laptop is totaly dead.

this is quite annoying and i hope someone finds a solution quick. i have toshiba satellite x200-15k which runned fine on both XP and Vista.

im typing fast before it SHUTS DOWN again!!

The same place as last time,control panel >system and security>power options>edit plan>advanced options>sleep>hibernate after

Do this but instead of Sleep-> Hibernate After
go to Hard disk -> Turn off hard disk after -> Setting: "Never" (default is 20 min!)

That might fix it.

I am having the same problem, it is not going to sleep or hibernation, it is shuting down completely. it is happening at random but i've noticed it also does it when i run the Windows experience index. Any ideas as this is starting to really piss me off

I have the exact same problem, It is not in the Power save Options, it is NOT in the SLEEP OR HIBERBATE options, the computer is NOT GOING TO SLEEP OR HIBERNATE.....plz read again....and then again if needed still. The Computer is having complete unexpected loss of power....as in when we come back and press our power buttons, it doesnt restore you to desktop, it boots up all from the start of bios and boot up screen, Ok so now that we are past the "They dont know about power saving option ( 4 Year Degree in Computer Technologies and Communications...I think I know about power save options and I am sure that if the guy who started this post is smart enough to verify the email required to post here, he knows about them as well ^^ ) ANyhow, my specs are below, same exact problem, maybe to much power draw from my vid card? PCI Express 2.0 meaning it is powered by the PCI Slot, but that does not mean it isnt drawing to much from it, also, Power Supply Temp, as a Safety STandard most are set to power off in the event of Over heating, what do you guys think?

Same Problem

I am having the same problem. I have checked all of my power options and everything. Even called the computer manufacturer(Dell) and they told me that it is a software issue. Hardware checked out fine. I can leave my computer on and come back to it and it will be completely turned off. I can also be using the computer and the screen will turn black and the computer shuts down. It do not go through the shut down process, it just goes blank as if it has completely lost power. Has anyone figured this out yet?

I think It might be your PC might be overheating. I had an older PC that was shutting down and restarting at total random times. I replaced my power supply and it did not fix the problem it turned out the thermal paste on my heat sink was dried out and causing my CPU to over heat after use. I had to clean off the old paste and put some new paste on it and that fixed the problem of the random shut downs. I just wish I did not replace the PSU first and thought about it being a heat issue first

That problem can be caused by many things. Go to start and type event viewer, and check for critical errors. They should show the time of the restarts, and probably kernel power error, with the code 41.

Check out my thread, I just bought a brand new dell pc with windows 7 and had the same issue. The problem was the bios, I updated it and it works fine now.

just to throw another stick in the mix, upgraded my system about 3 months ago Gigabyte H55MS2H mobo with i3 540 random shutdowns started straight away and i assumed the motherboard, when i spoke to the supplier they suggested it was the psu which was a 600w thermaltake from my old system and had served me well. so i swaped out the power supply with a new 550 thermaltake from another system. the 550 in my system worked fine and solved the problem, the odd thing was that the 600 in the other system also worked fine. interesting? well as i couldnt keep the 550, the 600 went back in and th problem continued, until one day it stoped, iv racked my brain trying to retrace what i could have dont, the only things that stand out are updating the motherboard drivers, replacing the backround picture and updating the bluetooth drivers. now the painful thing is i have done a clean install because i wasnt happy with the amount of crap on there and now my darling problem is back, i have upgraded the drivers and still no fix. i really pains me because i now know that it is a software problem i just dont know how to fix it.

Interesting... I am on this thread because my PC started doing the same thing! I followed the above instructions, and I have the right box checked as well. I installed W7 ... oh ... maybe a couple months ago and this just started. What a pain in my butcus.

Hello eujaynia and welcome to Seven Forums.

Couple more things you could try to pinpoint the problem.

Try the Performance Troubleshooter:

The next time Windows 7 turns off by itself restart in Safe Mode.
1. At Safe Mode desktop (weird screen with the words safe mode in each corner)click Start > Control Panel > Troubleshooting.
2. Double click on Troubleshooting to open the applet.
3. Under System and Security click on Check for Performance issues.

You could also install a free program like Speccy to get real time temperature readings to see if you have an overheating issue.
