I just installed a new motherboard in my HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate. Now when I run windows it will just randomly shut down. Even when I was installing windows it shut down twice in tell I got it installed. I have check to see if it is overheating and it is not. If I run windows in Safe Mode it WELL not shut down as a mater of fact I am writing thes message from Safe Mode. It has been on for 2 hours without shuting down.
When I reboot to regular mode it will shut down within a few min.

What should I look at or is there a program I can run to find what is wrong.
I have already checked for virus.

I also reinstalled windows from scratch 3 times.

Have you downloaded and installed all proper drivers for that new motherboard?

Have you disabled automatic restart on system failure (blue screen) I believe you have this option by pressing F8 just before windows starts loading on boot up. It may be a blue screen and your not getting to see it.

Memtest86++ might also be a good idea with your old ram in your new board, they may not be 100% BFF's

hmmm sounds intersting... so on safe mode it doesnt shut-down and no blue-screen at all?.. so you have an IDE hard drive right? cuz if its the IDE hard drive you might need a replacement.
also, do you replace the motherboard by yourself or it was done in a shop?

yes in safe mode it doesn't shut down and in regular mode when it shuts down no blue screen

Yes it has a IDE drive.
I changed the motherboard. If it was done in a shop I would have taken it back already.

I don't understand way it works in Safe mode but not in regular mode. I don't believe the hard drive is bad it is a few weeks new and I also ran Sprite on it which found no errors even at low leavels

try loading normal mode, then type msconfig into the start menu, turn everything off, then restart. Enable things one by one until you find the culprit.

I'm inclined to believe it is a driver issue. In safe mode, windows loads with only the minimal necessary drivers for it to work. Therefore, perhaps it is a driver that is causing the shutdowns. I would suggest you update all drivers for hardware and software and see if it continues. If not, we could enable driver verifier in an effort to identify the offending driver. But, doing that may require a reinstall and someone from crashes and debugging to read the dump files. You may have dump files in the current situation. You can find them in C;/windows/minidump. open that folder and Copy and paste the contents to your desktop (requires Admin approval). Right click them and select send to - compressed zip folder. also follow the instructions for posting in crashes and debugging. If updating drivers does not work, upload the mini dump and files from crashes and debugging in a new thread there.

Many users think this is still XP so change out all the drivers given by the Win7 installer and optional Windows Updates, or ignore the Windows Update drivers altogether and just swap out for OEM drivers on manufacturer's web pages for their model computer or device.

This completely ignores the advances made with drivers for Win7, where MS spent a fortune paying manufacturers to build drivers for Win7 so they wouldn't hold out like they did in early Vista forcing us to buy newer hardware, and so they have the drivers for Win7 in the installer or quickly updated via optional updates. Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

If a newer or different driver isn't delivered by Win7 then it likely isn't compatible or acceptable to the OS. Win7 is the authority on its own drivers, with rare exception.

What I would do is clean reinstall following these steps to get a perfect reinstall: Reinstalling Windows 7

You then have a baseline install from which you can troubleshoot any further random shutdowns using the logs and System Resources of Win7: troubleshooting step.

Once you determine if a driver is at fault then another one can be pursued through a thorough search however first one should start with the drivers Win7 wants for your hardware.

I just spent a month troubleshooting BSOD's on an older eMachine which turned out to be a single chipset driver from the OEM website that had been imported right after install as was standard with XP. This particular driver would not roll back with the full chipset so only a clean reinstall solved the problem - with no drivers imported except from optional Updates right after install. There was a reason Win7 held back from delivering this OEM chipset.
