Thanks for the reply - new thread started as requested

Checked that I do not have the problem integrated drivers. No other driver downloads offered in Update
Did virus scan - all ok
of the 3 KB files I had one, KB2534366 is for 64 bit, howeer did not have KB2533552 Genuine windows so installed that.
Search does not find checksur.exe so could not run that
Will try to install again in case it was the windows genuine thing and report back.

The install usually completes fine. It fails on restart when configuring so hope it might be the lack of genuine windows tool. Should not be anything to do with normal drivers as they have not been started at that point not even having reached the logon screen.

Tried again but still failed when configuring. Failed with error0x800f0826

Looks like I may have to try to go forward without SP1 as I am not trying to re install on a 3 week old netbook.

Any suggestions gratefully received thank you.

Thanks for that.

Found a couple that failed but when installing from download it says already installed. This is confirmed when I get up list of installed fixes and they are there.

Should I uninstall them and install again?

Looking right back to when I had PC a few weeks ago many updates were done I can see some more failures. Have spent a couple of hours going through all the failures and eliminating ones I could see that later installed.

All others I downloaded individually and tried to install. All came up either not applicable or already installed. Only KB2506212 failed with Not Enough Storage and KB976002 (browser choice) - no link to download.

What are my options now?

Is there any way to tell from a log which item is causing the config of SP1 to fail at 10%?
What happens if I ignore SP1?
Is my only option a complete re install? (after barely a month of hardly any use).

Only restore point is too recent - after last SP1 attempt.

Advice as always gratefully received

You can download, save, and then run the Windows Update Readiness Tool, aka CheckSUR, to see what the issue is in Component Based Servicing, if you so desire. The issue should be showing in one of the logs that CheckSUR creates when it is run -
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 32-bit (KB947821) [May 2011]

The logs are located at and named

Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

You can then attach either of the logs to your reply.

KB2534366
is for Windows 7 32 bit systems, too. Has that update been installed yet ?

How much free space is available on the Hard Drive ?

Have you installed many programs/applications ? If not, the least painful way to remedy this issue is to use the recovery method of the netbook's manufacturer (OEM) to restore the system back to the state it was when it was first booted up.

Then download and save the full, standalone Windows 7 Service Pack 1 32-bit (x86) - Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 ( windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe is the full, standalone for your system )

Ensure all drivers are fully up to date, then manually download, save, then install KB2533552 and KB2534366.
Install them in that order, individually, restarting between the installation of the 2 updates.

Then install the manually downloaded standalone SP1.

Will await your decision on either running CheckSUR or using the OEM's recovery method.

Whilst waiting for any advice have ordered 2GB of Ram as it might be better to get the upgrade to Win 7 Home Premium.

If I did that I would hopefully sidestep all this. Something to consider.

Very helpful advice thanks

I tried to install KB947821 but it keeps saying not applicable for my computer! I have Win 7 starter edition - does it only work for the full editions?

KB2534366 states it is for 64bit systems and windows again says n/a for my system and will not install.

I wanted to try this before resetting so you could review the log file. However if that is not possible then on Monday when I have time I will have to revert to the OEM version and then install the three updates. Is it really just those three if I download the full edition.

I assume reverting to the OEM will lose all my registry entries for my installed programes?

Do appreciate your help here thanks.

PS assume that the full SP1 ( 500mb+) could not be installed possibly containing anything missing?

Update Seems to be several versions of the Update Readiness Tool. Found a version which seems to be installing. Might not be able to try it out and post logs or report issues until tomorrow evening.

Installed the v12 of the readiness tool.

Whilst a search under checksur gave no hits I do seem to have to logfiles which are attached. Are these the correct ones? If not I will look again tomorrow at what I am doing wrong.

CheckSUR shows no missing/corrupt content in the logs.
By the way, KB2534366 is intended for Windows 7 32-bit systems, also. Did you click on the link in my previous post to download the update ?

Hi - yes tried to install and windows says already installed but SP1 still fails.

So are you able to confirm that my choices are:

Revert to original config, install just those 3 updates and presumably re install all my software again.

Upgrade to Windows full home edition - would that eliminate this issue?

Not happy with Microsoft - the Netbook is only 4 weeks old and apart from installing initial programs (anti virus, network settings, firefox etc and some of my own games) is endlessly installing windows updates

I doubt that this updating issue is related to the edition of Windows that's installed. The most likely cause is antivirus software or a lack of free space on the Hard Drive.

And, yes, your least painless method to resolve the installation of SP1 is to use the recovery method of the netbook's manufacturer (OEM) to restore the system back to the state it was when it was first booted up.

Then download and save the full, standalone Windows 7 Service Pack 1 32-bit (x86) - Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
( windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe is the full, standalone for your system )

Ensure all drivers are up to date, then manually download, save, then install the TWO updates, KB2533552 and KB2534366. Install them in that order, individually, restarting between the installation of the 2 updates.

Next, create a folder on the root drive (the drive where Windows is installed to, which is usually the C:\ drive )and name it SP, Service Pack, or whatever suits your fancy. Move the manually downloaded and saved, standalone SP1 to the new folder.
Then install SP1 with all of the required restarts.

I disabled MS Sec Essentials realtime protection.

I have 37GB free - is that enough or do I need to re partition?
Loolks like full reversion is only option then.

Getting ready to start the long process.

Got the 3 updates ready and will install and reboot for each in turn and see what happens

Update.

Did the above steps after reverting to factory settings.

At last SP1 has installed and now putting anti virus on PC. Will spend the week installing all the other software.

Can you confirm that I should now carry on installing whatever updates Windows wants?

Really appreciate your help - big thank you.

Congratulations chrisreb! :D

I would say it is OK, but perhaps it would be best to let MowGreen confirm that. ;)

OK thanks.

Would never have known that just 2 updates required before SP1 without all your help.

Sometime soon I hope to be able to use the Netbook for something other than Windows updates!

Update

Whilst backing up the Netbook having installed the basics I see Windows wants to install another 35 important updates -sigh!

Nice going chrisreb !

Please do NOT install 35 updates in one updating session. Install, at most, updates in groups of 5.
I'm not sure what Microsoft considers as Important but, since SP1 came out in February, some of the updates do not need to be installed.

Do NOT install .NET Framework 4 unless a program/application or website installs it in order for it to function properly.
Do not install .NET Framework 4 simply because Microsoft considers it "Important".

Unless you want to use it, do NOT install anything that starts with "Microsoft Live" simply because it's being offered.

Install .NET Framework updates along with other .NET Framework updates ONLY !

Install updates for Internet Explorer by themselves, too, along with no other updates.

Do NOT install any driver updates for hardware from Windows Update.
Either get them from the netbook's manufacturer or from the hardware manufactures' websites.
