Hi Im new on here and not great on computers but I know a little. My friend has recently bought a dell laptop with windows 7 installed, the problem is at start up it gives a choice of 2 windows 7 and has a black background. Both options have different settings when logged in. How do we get rid of this screen and just leave the one with the correct settings? thanks

Right click on Computer (on start menu) and click on Properties. On the window that appears click on Advanced System Settings (on the left). Now select the Advanced Tab, then Startup and Recovery Settings. On the next window you should see Default Operating System, from there you should be able to choose which you boot with etc.

Hope this helps?

hi, thanks everyone for your quick response!
I think the screen shows a duel boot but with winodws 7 x 2 if that makes sence. I can choose from booting with windows 7 or the other options is also windows 7. The computer is new. Reading around, if I understand correctly, when windows 7 is installed over xp it can cause this problem??? If this is correct, then this could only have been done by the retailer updating it to windows 7. I really think I should contact them and see what they have to say. what do you guys think...

Type Disk Management into Start search box. Post back here a screeshot of your full Disk Management drive map and we can help you sort it out. Use Snipping Tool in Start Menu, attach file using paper clip in Reply box.

If there are indeed two Win7's, you will want to preserve the one which is System Active, after booting into it to confirm it is fully functional and contains your files. We can help you then delete the other one.

Or we can help you recover System Active MBR into the other Win7 if you prefer that one. Determine which you want to keep by booting into each and checking Disk Mgmt to see which you are currently in.
