I have had this bug ever since I got Windows 7. Even when I was testing the Beta and RC. The problem is every time I start windows up I will login but the startup sound won't play. When the sound doesn't play programs that play media of any kind like Winamp just start up an then crash. Things like web browsers will work but when I try to play some sort of media in them like Flash video or audio the plugin stops working and crashes the browser. I think this may be some sort of codec error. I have k-lite Mega Codec pack installed but I'm not sure if that's the problem since I have installed it on my friends computer with Windows 7 an it works fine. By the way, I only have three third party programs that start when Windows starts (not counting windows ones) and they are- Steam, Fraps, Xfire. I have tried turning those off with no difference. The problem may be the k-lite codec pack but if it is I don't know of any other good packs.

Also, this bug is off an on. Sometimes the sound will work and everything is fine but if not it takes about 2-3 restarts for the sound to play indicating the media will work as well.

AJC,

To start with, uninstall the klite codec pack, reboot and do a cleanup with CCleaner. Then test that the sound options are set to windows default in personalize (Right click on desktop, then click on Personalize) and that in Sound options in Control Panel, a sound is assigned to windows startup.

If that solves your problem, it probably has to do with klite. If you are keen on a codec pack, try Shark's. I've heard they are quite good. Just google for them.

It sounds like the sound drivers priority is being 'delayed' by other processes at start up.

Have you been using the k-lite codec pack with all your installations?

I'd also suggest removing the codec pack and testing for a while. otherwise it could simply be your sound driver is not quite 7 friendly (depending on when it was last updated).

You shouldn't need Klite codecs for Win7, and if this has tailed you all the way from beta then it or another installed program is the likely culprit.

I'd use Revo Uninstaller free version in Advanced mode to make sure you get out all of it's traces. You may still need to clean reinstall or http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R if it has affected a setting that causes your problem.
