Hello,

I did a clean install of window 7 yesterday and it was working fine until today when I rebooted it goes to a error screen that says "windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" I have tried to go into safe mode to restore but it will just take me back to the error screen....I have tried to boot up from window 7 DVD and it again takes me back to the error screen...I have tried everything i would do another reinstall if I could but I CANT.. this is very frustrating any help would be appreciated.

I have a sony vaio VGN-FW230J if that is important...

Hello mk, welcome to Sevenforums!

Might I ask why you are unable to install Win7 more than once?

Run through this tutorial 3 times (perform it 3 times): http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html

Failing this, perhaps the only thing you can do is reinstall. I've not heard of any other way

Why can't you do another reinstall?

Did you do any Windows Updates or installed a new program?

What do you mean you tried booting up from the Windows 7DVD? Where you able to bootup from it or not? If you were, I dont think you should have received the "Windows failed to start error" if you were running from the DVD.

I think the problem is your unable to load from a different device other than HDD(where the OS is install). Do you know what the KEY is to enable you to go into Boot options Menu? It's usually F2, F10, F11, F12 or DEL for most computers.
When you restart the computer, before the Windows Logo is about to comin in. Press one of the keys i mention repeatatly, a boot menu options should appear, you want to load from CD/DVD Drive to reinstall Windows from the DVD

mk, try this tutorial out to see if it helps any: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139576-startup-repair-infinite-loop-recovery.html - tutorial created by Dzomlija

mk, don't regret the windows install, it was a problem waiting to happen. Windows install is important for security, performance, and compatability, etc. If it doesn't work, than that is just another problem waiting to happen. You will need to have access to it.

thank you guys for trying to help but its now 4 am and I'm about to just give up...

I have done the above tutorial as well takes me to the same black screen
lol I just wish SOMETHING would be different but everything leads me to it...

Don't get overly excited. While your computer now boots okay, the installer part may still be jacked. You may still end up reinstalling.

PS if you believe in the power of speech, perhaps you shouldn't have just read all of that.

btw night!

Yes, press any key to boot DVD at bootup.

If you don't get that prompt, use the one-time BIOS Boot menu key or follow these steps to set DVD drive to boot first: How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

If problems persist wipe the HD first before reinstall: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Clean Install Windows 7
