Solved Windows 7 stuck at "setup is preparing your computer for first use"

A miracle the system got started up when I removed the installation cd and inserted an old windows xp cd:)

I had a problem with the windows 7 key not working. But I used one from the installation disk of my old pc. I don't rely know if it will create any problems in the future.

Thanks a million for the help. Hopefully I won't be needing it anymore.

The problem was with my BD drive. If you have the same problem as me, you may be able to resolve it by unplugging the drive after windows have been installed.

I do not understand what you say was the solution to your problem? Did you say you removed the installation DVD and put in an XP CD? How would that possibly help? Perhaps removing the DVD released the DVD drive which was hanging the install?

If this is the case then I would unplug the DVD drive and use a USB stick for install. I provided you with another installer ISO and tool to write to stick in the initial troubleshooting steps I wrote out which cover 90% of install failures.

Sounds like the install finished.

I think something was wrong with my BD drive, and even thou I was able to performer the initial installations using the drive, it caused a lot of trouble on the first boot from the HD. The solution was to remove the drive until all other drivers were installed and then reinserting the drive as the last part of the installation processes.

I discovered that the BD drive was the problem when I wanted to try installing XP, but I don’t think the change of disk did any difference other then preventing the drive from stalling the installation.

The drive was apparently also what gave me problems the first time I managed to install the OS because I hit the same problems as last time until I removed the drive.

But thanks again gregrocker. You are right removing the drive and installing with a USB would also have worked. I just didn’t realize that the BD drive could be the problem, because it worked fine on when I installed Windows 7 on my old PC, and the fact that I was able to boot and install the Windows normally, didn’t exactly feed my suspicions that the drive was the problem.
