Hi all,

My first posting :-) My 64-bit Windows 7 home PC (Acer quad-core M3802, factory installed OS, about 4 months' old) has gone into meltdown this morning. It crashes with a blue screen every 5 to 10 minutes (or at login) with a random error (see below) and a random driver indicated in a minidump analysis. I have tried to disable antivirus (AVG free) and the internet connection, but these have no effect.

Any ideas...

Many thanks,
Bill

More information.... The system does not seem to crash in safe mode. The latest series of crashes have occurred at remarkably regular intervals of about or just over 11 minutes: 11:19, 10:50, 11:13, 11:00, 11:19, 11:28, 11:20...

Looks like AVG is causing the problem. Uninstall it, and then run this cleanup tool: http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arv_sup_____.dir/avgremoverx64.exe

Then download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

It's fixed: many, many, many thanks Jonathan. Perhaps you could explain in a sentence or two how an anti virus program could cause such carnage.

Thanks again,
Bill

An anti-virus program should be one of the most active programs on your computer. It needs to monitor everything that goes on.

The chance of an AV being poorly written might not be much higher than the chance of a different app, but the chance of those bugs showing up is much higher, due to the high activity of the program.

I'm so glad the problem is solved. Thank you for reporting back!

To confirm that this is a good fix, I have a built system very similar to yours and shortly after I installed AGV 9.0 free, began getting SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION BSODs at login in time. I used safemode to get into msconfig and stop both the AVG startup and service. Rebooted, logged in and uninstalled AVG. No more SSE BSODs.

So that begs the question: is there a recommended anti-virus that will not crash Windows7 64bit?

Yes, there is. Microsoft Security Essentials.

As a Microsoft product, it is guaranteed to play well with Windows.
