Hi there. One of my Windows 7 PCs just refuses to update sometimes. Overnight it did 14. Then this morning there is still a definition update for MSE and a Graphics adapter updater for nVidia. It just doesn't want to do it and comes up with an error message 80072EFD. Now if I update MSE from within the program itself, it works. But that's not a permanent solution. I still wonder what is wrong and how to handle that. Also, I do not know how to allow specific websites through the Firewall. I know how to allow programs, but not websites. And judging from some answers on forums concerning this subject, it may not be the answer either. Thank you in advance for any tips.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Thanks, NoelDP. I was just before receiving your reply able to connect by stopping the service and restarting it. Then it didn't give me an error message when I checked for updates. But here is the log file. This problem keeps happening... Normally this PC is connected by dial up because of being located in a rural area. I am troubleshooting it via regular broadband. Don't know if that makes a difference.

All the errors in the log are consistent with a poor internet connection - and possibly a bad proxy server.
MSE self-updates using a different server and process to the rest of windows updates, which is probably why it updates more readily.
You may want to try resetting the winsock tables -

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command.

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

reboot on request and see if that helps at all.
