Windows 7 System Requirements

These are the Official System Requirements for Windows 7.

• 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• 1 GB of RAM (32-bit)/2 GB of RAM (64-bit)
• 16 GB of available disk space (32-bit)/20 GB (64-bit)
• DirectX 9 graphics device with Windows Display Driver Model 1.0 or higher driver

By today’s hardware standards, these requirements are pretty tame.

Like forever, MS has always downplayed the system requirements for every OS since DOS 2.0 (when I first started using an MS OS).

The minimums are such that a PC will boot and run without crashing, from the weight of the OS itself. But at the minimum level for ram, for instance, don't expect any kind of performance.

I just overhauled a little HP laptop that came out with only 256megs of ram and XP-Home. It ran, (actually crawled) but that's about it.
I have added another one gig of ram and the performance has improved markedly.

I encourage anyone today, buying a laptop computer, to MAX out the ram right from the Git-Go. Ram is the cheapest when it's the current type. Buying ram for an old PC can really break the bank.

For Desktop PC's, I wouldn't dream of buying one with less than 2 gigs of dual channel ram and a SATA2 hard drive, even for XP.
And 3 gigs of ram for Vista or Win-7.

Don't be "Penny wise, but pound foolish".
