is there any way to edit the taskbar to make it look like the way I want it to? like instead of having the default glass look, have a solid shiny look. and is there anyway to change the start button orb?

You can do most of this through themes, some of the stuff you're talking about is a bit more complicated, but most of it is done through themes. Just search for Windows 7 themes and find one that you like
