Windows 7 Time Synchronization

Hi folks, I have just switched from XP to 7 Home Premium and I really like it, however I have a question regarding Time Synchronisation. With XP it always told you when it had last been synchronised, whether the synchronisation was successful or not and the next scheduled synchronisation. With Windows 7, there is no information. I was going to post this thread last night but tried the Update Now button on Internet Time Settings and the information appeared in Date and Time-> Internet Time, (Like it used to in XP), so decided not to post. I have just realised though that if you restart the computer later on, this information disappears. Is there any way to keep this information from disappearing? The only reason I ask is with XP, sometimes it would fail to synchronise, but at least it would inform me so I could try another Internet Time server or manual update. Does Windows 7 inform you if it fails to automatically synchronize? Thanks.

There is no reason to babysit Windows 7, it can and does handle itself just fine.

Hi and welcome to Seven Forums, I never had XP notify me if it failed to update time automatically other than in the Event Viewer. If the Update Now button is used and it failed, it would. Same goes for Win 7(using the Update button)

There is no reason to babysit Windows 7, it can and does handle itself just fine.

Whew! Now I can look for another job since I no longer need to babysit Win 7. Thanks for that info, lol

It does not notify directly in XP, but you can just see it when you open Time & Dates

One way around your problem is to do a Direct Sync. with a more reliable Time Server than the ones Windows uses.
The US Atomic Clock IP Address is 132.163.4.102 ,Type this Address in your Internet Time Servers Slot and press the update now button. Windows will keep this address as its default sync. address until you change it. The sync. is always flawless.
Now the default Update Interval for Time Synchronization in Windows is 7 Days.
You can change how frequent Windows Synchronize with the internet time servers with a simple reg. entry.
HKLM_System_CurrentControlSet_servicies_W32Time\Config -------->UpdateInterval----604800
The amount 604800 is the amount of Seconds in 7 days,
You can change the amount to reflect how often your Computer Synchronizes.
Reboot after making the changes.
Another way is to run Task Scheduler to open Date an Time, when Windows Synchronizes Time.

I am not an expert and I had somewhat similar problem on w32time synchronization with Time Servers and none of the solutions offered on the net seemed to work. By logic I used a combination from different solutions and it worked for me. Try it and see if it works!

At the elevated command prompt (with administrator privileges), type the following command

1. Type "w32tm /debug /disable" and press 'Enter' (net stop w32time gave an Error 5 Access denied response!)

2. Type "w32tm /unregister" and press 'Enter' (without using the first command the second did not work!)

you should get the response " W32Time successfully unregistered"

3. Type "w32tm /register" and press 'Enter'

you should get the response "W32Time successfully registered"

4. Type "net start w32time" and press 'Enter'

you should get the response "The windows Time Service is starting. The windows time service was started successfully"

This ensured my Internet Time synchronization started working again. I suppose w32tm and w32time commands are interchangeable.
