Windows 7 to Windows 9 Upgrade to Cost $30 – Report

Windows 9 will play multiple roles when it hits the market in early 2015, and in addition to providing users with a much more familiar working environment and new features, the new OS will also help Microsoft itself get over the Windows 8 failure.

Recently, it has emerged that Windows 9 might be available free of charge for Windows 8.1 users, and now it appears that the company is also preparing a special offer for those running Windows 7.

According to Russian leaker WZor, who has already provided us with several accurate details on Windows 9, Microsoft is planning to make the upgrade from Windows 7 to this new operating system very affordable.

Although not yet confirmed, a $30 (€24) upgrade is very likely to be offered to those on Windows 7 who want to switch to Windows 9, with the whole process very likely to be conducted all automatically, without the need for a clean install.

Nice price and all, maybe somewhat too soon to make conclusions, but what MS really needs to provide is a real reason to switch from 7 to 9.

I doubt I will do any of the above.

The problem I see is that this (most likely) will only be for standard users. It will probably be the Windows 9 with Bing version only. If you have 8.1 Pro, it stands to reason they will charge you another $100.00 for the upgrade and then another $10.00 charge if want Media Center. I just won't do it.

There will be nothing Windows 9 can offer over 8.1 other than eye candy (a new menu, so what). The App Store will not be improved, not much of anything else. It just wouldn't be worth it, at least not for me. IMHO.

Wasn't 8.0 $40?

Vaguely remember it was.

Assuming this is better than 8.0 ( has to be) then maybe that first $40 wasn't completely wasted.

I believe a upgrade of win-8 started out as 19.99 ;)

Who needs Media Center haven't touched in years and that was just to turn off it's auto updating of a worthless t.v. guide :)

Plenty of free players available if and when compatible :/
I doubt wmp will be for sale who would buy it :roflmao:

Well we use Media Center daily, we replaced all of our Comcast Set Top Boxes with Silicondusts HD Prime and all of our TVs (5), which saves us $40 a month charge for the units. The cable card(s) cost us $1.50 per month, in comparison. Hmm, $40 x 12 = $480.00 dollars a year, not a bad investment. Also, all of our tablets can run it, I forgot about those. Oh, and we can record shows weeks in advance.

An added benefit is, we actually have better pictures, the comcast boxes, were always a dismal quality.

and there are approximately 60+ million users of Media Center, so just because you don't use, please don't undermine those of us who do.

I will wait and see how it performs in REAL world terms. MS is always quick to show all the bells and whistles before they have taken the OS for a decent ride. When it hits, I will devote a machine, a nice SSD and 16gb ram. Then we shall see. :)

Ha another service I couldn't use Comcast
I personally had to remove my cable card to make room for a graphics card something I did need opposed to something that I didn't need
I'm glad people use wmc I never found any use for it personally but it was a source of a computer wakeup at 2a.m. that bugged the heck out of me for a few weeks ;)

My wife has a Dell 1545 laptop with Windows 7 on it. If Microsoft offers a good upgrade deal to Windows 10 we would buy it. Same goes for my Dell 17r laptop with Windows 8.1.

I use to dual boot other operating systems to try out other OS's but have gone the way of using virtualbox as a way of testing. It is very nice to use and I now am looking to try it with ms 10. Though I don't believe that 10 will blow the doors like 7 has done off anything ms has produced in the past. I am willing to try it. And would spend $30 -$35 to do it.

Hi there

Windows 10 as it now is could be a decent upgrade from W7. You get a built in Virtual disc mounter (no more 3rd part apps to create these - useful too as a lot of modern machines don't even HAVE internal DVD's any more) and a decent built in security system.

You will get eventually a lot of apps that will work the same whether on your phone or on your computer and for people running VM's the HYPER-V system is a really good step in the right direction -- works pretty well too. HYPER-V is included in W8 / W8.1 and W10.

You'll find as a W7 user you won't have to "Unlearn" anything to use W10 -- W8 was a real dog for a lot of people who weren't interested in touch devices - and in any case I find even on a mobile phone once you've got a load of apps installed endless tile scrolling is just a PAIN.

You'll also get guaranteed updates rather than being thrust out on a limb -- I believe some people are already calling W7 "The new XP". You can of course STAY with W7 but I would think that at 30 USD the upgrade will be worth it.

Another nice feature is that you can use STORAGE SPACES making any form of RAID unnecessary on a Home computer and the great thing about Storage spaces is that unlike RAID you can combine HDD's of DIFFERENT capacities to form part of a storage pool -- multiple storage spaces are supported too.

If you are happy then stay on W7 but if the upgrade is only 30 USD (might even be less) IMO when W10 is released next year it would be a no brainer to go for it.

In any case why not try it out on a VM - it's free to download - even the enterprise version and lasts until April. You can also mess around with the excellent Windows to Go feature as well. (Download the ENTERPRISE trial version for this feature).

All it costs to at least TRY it is a bit of download bandwidth, some HDD space and a little bit of time to install it. If you really don't like it NOTHING lost - but at least HAVE A GO. !! Where's your curiosity -- don't rely on some no nothing journalist's mouthings.

Cheers
jimbo
