Windows 7 to Windows XP sharing not working

just a quick thought what is the service pack level of the XP install, I discovered a similar problem when trying to connect a XP SP3 or Vista SP1 to a XP SP1 or lower install.

I believe it is a problem with the type of authentication used. I'm no Microsoft tech but I think XP is expecting a plain text password but vista and seven will only send encrypted passwords by default. I might be wrong.

Make sure the XP install has SP3.

Or SP2,network works with SP2 too!

Promised earlier here I try to install an old XP I had to an extra rig and try to learn this thing. It seems my XP-CD is so scratched it won't work anymore and I'm not willing to spend any money to buy it (for principal reasons I don't want to get a pirated copy).

For me this is end of the story, can not help.

If you have a valid licence key I wouldn't call it piracy. Since bp96 can see the Windows XP PC from Windows 7 it shows Netbios is working.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NetBIOS provides three distinct services:
  • Name service for name registration and resolution (port: 137)
  • Datagram distribution service for connectionless communication (port: 138)
  • Session service for connection-oriented communication (port: 139)
It's more likely port 445 is blocked on the Windows XP side or a problem with Winsock2.

I've been sharing these two Op system for months with zero problems. You just need to run the XP network wizard and tell it to allow sharing as it sets up. Of course you need enable all the Win 7 settings for sharing also. This works for me every single time without fail.

Yep it only takes one of those sharing settings to be off and it won't work. Many layers of security for Win7. But sharing between XP and 7 works perfectly no doubt about it.

But I'm not sharing anything

I am getting a master browser error between my win7 box and the XP box on my network, but I am not sharing anything. Specifically the error states "The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced" (that's the last part of the error message).

Since I am not sharing anything, not sure why I am getting this error -
anyone have any advice?

Thanks for reporting that fix for this problem Pingboy. Very useful information. There are a few other registry adjustments which fix sharing problems in different circumstances where sharing isn't working correctly. I'll add this one to my list. :)
