Windows 7 Turns 1 Tomorrow, SP1 in 2011, Windows 8 Nowhere to Be Seen

I have had windows 7 for about 7 months a 5 months shy of a year im still learning it and working with it

Does microsoft really have to keep purging our pockets i love win 7 it is the best thing behinde xp and 98

Im about to dump money on a new gpu and i really don't want to change my windows yet not for another year or two atleast

Looking at it from Microsoft's perspective, they made the mistake with XP of keeping it around too long. People got way too comfortable with it and now they're in the pickle of getting people off of XP after years of being standardized on it. 7 is definitely doing decently in that department but Microsoft wants it to go to the cycle back in the 90s, which was a new OS about every 3 years.

I don't like it as in my view, Microsoft charges way too much for Windows. I think they should take the Apple model and just make one version and sell it for either $50 or $100 ... a full version. Rather than having this upgrade and full version crap with all these editions out there.

Actually Seven Forums started the end of June '08, that makes it 2 years and 4 months ago.

There are many reasons why end users are reluctant to deploy Windows 7. Most of which is a financial decision, and especially at the corporate level. I don't think being comfortable with XP is a significant factor in upgrading. I also don't believe that Microsoft is the big bad wolf some people make them out to be. Just my personal opinion.

As long as Windows 7 is selling like hot cakes we won't see Windows 8 coming out. Microsoft isn't going to kick the dog that is bring the money home. I think the direction they will go is getting corporations off of XP and into Windows 7or there new servers.

I think what throws most off is not realizing that XP was rushed while Vista saw several delays leaving a large gap over what had been the 2-3yr. schedule previously seen for each new version. That was the intended schedule started with 3.1 to 95 to 98 and the ME which flopped!

The flop is what resulted in MS rushing XP out to offer a new desktop version with too many bugs. Now almost a full 10yrs. old it took SP3 to turn XP into a somewhat working OS. Vista was delayed and saw it's release with lowered minimum requirements not accounting for those still running older hardwares and having limited system resources while being a more stable but "larger" version which got a bad rep.

With the previous rushed and then delayed versions W7 has proven itself to be the "out of the box" champ but may still only be the start of some type of normalcy for keeping a 2-3yr. time table. All we can do is hope that W8 will turn out to be an "improved on" succession of newer versions with 7 being the leadoff!

(I'm sure most don't want to end up seeing the following versions become "Flops"!)

What was wrong with XP SP2?

SP2 enabled some newer things at the time and made an improvement on the old version but was far from covering everything that needed to be fixed. Many have noted that once SP3 was on XP finally started becoming a working OS.

I skipped over ME into XP SP1 here and as far as comparing 98 and XP 98SE never saw any BSODs which XP is known for! Many preferred keeping 2000 or 2000 Pro running and skipped over XP into Vista and were quite satisfied.

As far as which version should be considered "Gold" we're finally running that now! 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7... all the way! "verdict: Not buggy!"

I could not disagree more. In a year 7 passed over Vista installs in use. A year.

There is no 2000 or 2000 pro. There is only 2000 Professional and it was a direct replacement of NT4.0.

It was better than NT, it was WAY better than ME and from my experience I'll say it was better than Vista too.

Just my opinion...and you're certainly entitled to yours!

Well the 2000 Pro was short for 2000 Professional just like XP Pro is short for XP Professional.

I know some that were reluctant about 7 at first and would have easily gone to Vista having bypassed XP entirely from having previously run 2000. They found Vista was a bit more stable and were concerned about any new version until having run 7 for a good period of time.

XP unfortunately was rushed there to recover from the ME flop leaving that with a lot of problems.

I read that like two different OS's, like XP Pro and XP Home.
2000 was only one flavor...for desktop OS, and like usual several for server OS.

Many considered ME as 2000 simply since that was on the idea of a home version of the two separate versions released that year. The advantages 2000 Pro saw however was being able to replace the 9x family as well as NT 4.0 being an NT cored OS over the continuation of Fat.

But what I'm waiting for like others at this time is the RC release of the SP1 for 7 while the old version there has already seen it's day with 6 SPs.

I never liked windows 2000. I stuck with windows 98 SE until XP was released and even then, I didn't think much of XP prior to SP2. I never bothered with Vista after seeing its atrocious performance on the first vista machine I ever saw. I've used it more in the past year or so than any time before windows 7 was released, because it really isn't all that bad when it's installed to adequate hardware

One of the reasons I had to continue running XP until the 7 RCs were out was due to not being able to run several things on Vista until the 7 betas were just coming where one company "finally"! released a Vista update or the 64bit support was seen for running a newer version on the 64bit 7.

The one thing found with the two SPs for Vista while in beta was an easy install and easy to remove later once the final versions were out. I ran the SP2 beta straight up until the 7 RCs were already out at the time. Now to see if the RC goes on and runs that well for the 7 SP1.

I'm extremely happy with Windows 7 but I loved the pre RC period on this forum. At one point I was installing "leaked" beta builds every other day (or so it seemed)
It was a very exciting and happy time. Some members refrained from sleep for months!
Seems most people are agreed that 7 is fantastic and it's hard to think of improvements but I want that buzz again so bring on the betas of W8 I say
