After doing a disk clean job and rebooting , Windows is stuck first at 100% installing updates , then I forced a shutdown , now its stuck at 35% complete. What to do? Instead of messing around with repair can I just restore using a Macrium Image I made of the computer prior to using the disk clean tool ?

Tks

Hi sportflyer,

If you don't have a restore point prior to cleaning, that's is what I would recommend.
Seems as though you cleaned some Win Update files, OOPS!
Curious, what disk clean tool please?

Yes I did . I wanted to clean system files ( approx 10 G ) to prepare laptop for reinstalling windows 10 .

I used window's diskclean. Have used this many times on my other computers. This particular laptop (HP 72G series with pentium dual core cpu.) belongs to a friend and is really slow . Maybe I didn't wait long enough when it was at 100% . I fixed it by booting into safe mode and used recovery . My back up option was to re image but did not use it since recovery worked.

My W7 also got stuck.
First at 100%
Then after a reboot at 35%
Safe mode and other startup options also ended up in 35%.
Finally I decided to just wait.
It took about 30 minutes, then W7 did continued successfully.
Patience was the key.

I confirm this.
After installing MS Office 2016 I rebooted and my Windows 7 SP1 x64 stuck at 35% for 40 min.
Eventually the Windows Update ended up successfully.

So keep calm and carry on!
