hi ICit2lol, ran the last program which was bleeping computer. It now takes up to 30sec to open a site or a document but once open the machine navigates through it at a reasonable rate. Along the way I got a request to install Java - twice - so I did that...
the only thing now is it seems whenever I switch on my machine it seems to run its scans in the background and will take a while before I can do anything at a reasonable pace. thanx for the advice mate. cheers, i'll close this off soon..

If the last thing you installed and run was AdwCleaner from Bleeping Computer their is no way it is running in the background. It is a on demand program.
Check your msconfig/Startup and see if something has been added. Also check Non Microsoft services and see if Adobe has added a auto update checker.

Sorry Rich I thought you meant was running scans in he background per se' as Layback says ADW you need to run it from scratch each time - do as he says and maybe look in All programs just to see what you have got in the way of AV stuff in there and let us know what they are.
If there more than two real time ones running it is very possible the ongoing scans are being cause d by that.
Now it could be that you may have removed an AV program form the machine but it has left remnants behind as you should always use the specific removal tools for ant specific AV.
