I'm trying to download the new security updates the new activation thing for my copy of Windows 7 Pro but it's not going. Before I click install it says it's download at 68% but won't download anymore. When I manually select to download them all it just goes to 0% and doesn't go anywhere. This is getting annoying because when I need to shut my computer down it tries to download and install them but never works. Any help? Thanks.

If you don't have a nasty malware, then try this:
Download one and only one of the updates. Do not rush things. After install is finished AND the hard disk has settled down, then RESTART your computer whether MS said you needed to restart or not.

Keep doing this. One update at a time. Slow and tedious. I suspect you either have a virus or other software which you have installed which is dragging your system down.

Well I selected one smaller file(Under 1 MB) and it still isn't downloading. I wouldn't think it was virus though. Right now I just started Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware full scan. I ran a Microsoft Security Essentials quick scan this morning also and found nothing(I will do a full scan too if there are still problems). I don't think I really downloaded anything lately that would really cause this this problem. Do you have any other suggestions? Is there a way to shut down the PC without trying to update first? Thanks.

When you say "it is not downloading", what is happening?

MS has a site where you can download updates without using that update wizard.

Can't find my bookmark for the site right now and I've emptied my old email. But if you will google the KB number for the update, then you will probably end up with a chance to download the update by itself.

I'm not sure what the problem was. Probably a virus. I just reinstalled my copy of Windows 7 and everything is good again.

Not sure if this is related but I could not hurt to check it out. I had a similar issue with updates that it was not allowing Windows 7 to download updates and was giving me the timeout error code. After further investigation I found that my anti-virus and malware programs were not able to update. Not sure if or how I may have obtained a virus I ran some offline virus packages to find nothing. I tested my firewall and found nothing. After some deep thought I stated to look at my hardware. The first thing I did was removed my router from the chain and direct connected my cable modem to my computer. Tested the update on Win 7 and presto it updated without a hitch, also my anti virus programs as well. Now, I'm getting with Linksys(Cisco) concerning my router to figure out where the denial of connection could be. I may update this thread when that is found. I hope this helps some one.
