For almost a year I haven't been able to download a single update for Windows 7 (Have around 75 pending important updates to download). Sometime ago, I recall stumbling across a backdoor virus on my PC. It prevented me from accessing any of my programs, including the internet. I had to go into safe mode to remove the virus. A few days later I had pending operating system updates. When I went to update, it was unable to even gain access online (my internet connection was fine). Microsoft Security Essentials also, was compromised and unable to update itself. I was able to correct it, though Windows Update has remained the same.

I have attempted to clean-boot up Windows, in hopes that it had been Malware Bytes that was blocking the updates all along. The Updater was able to find out that I had 75 pending updates, though when it went to actually download them, it was unable to and gave me an error code, 80246008. I have seen another post from a user here that had a similar problem, but I'm not sure him and I have the exact issue. (http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...-7-cannot-check-updates-error-0x80070002.html)

I've had problems with Windows XP, 7 before. But nothing this frustrating or difficult to figure out. Any help you can give me would greatly be appreciated.

There are no significant problems showing in either SFC/CBS or the CheckSUR - so the problem is probably a registration one, or a problem with the Services.

First stop - the services.
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands (Note - you are likely to get errors. Please ignore them - this is a fact-finding mission, not a fix attempt! :))

NET START BFE
SC QC BFE
NET START BITS
SC QC BITS
NET START EVENTSYSTEM
SC QC EVENTSYSTEM
NET START "COM+ EVENT SYSTEM"
SC QC "COM+ EVENT SYSTEM"
NET START TRUSTEDINSTALLER
SC QC TRUSTEDINSTALLER

Copy and paste the results to your reply
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Also, I mentioned doing a clean boot up to windows. I know that temporary disables certain services such as anti virus, etc. To undo that, do I just restart windows?

OK - it's not quite as bad as it might have been, then ;)

I've uploaded a file - BITSBFE.zip - to my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21526
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Save it to the default location
This should create a file BITSBFE.reg

right-click on the file, and select Merge
Accept the warnings, - you should then get a 'Success' message.
Close all windows, and reboot.

Now try Windows updates :)

Sorry for not posting last night, I had some work to get done and I just got out of work. I was able to log in to that site, but I think the file has expired. Could you post it again on there?

Success! It's now downloading the updates. Thank you very much for your help! :D

I just have one other question. Previously I did a clean-boot restart to windows. It disabled certain applications such as anti-virus, etc. Is there a way to undo that, and revert the restart back to it's original use? (I'm not sure if that makes sense)

You are missing the obvious one.Check for malware if you have this error code.

If BFE & BITS were missing then verify if you have following services

Windows firewall
security center
Windows defender

Indeed, when I went to check up on those three security protocols, none of them were turned on, and could not update/turn on. Some of them also came with specific error codes. Would you like me to include them in the next post?

OK - please download the file wdscfwx64.zip from my SkyDrive - extract the contained file, and Merge it as before.

NOTE: the three service startup types may need to be adjusted, according to your other installed software.

Current startup types are
WinDefend: - Manual (suitable for use with MSE - you may need to change it to Disabled for use with other AVs)
WSCSVC: Auto(delayed) - should be OK with most security software
MPSSVC: Auto - if you have a third-party firewall installed this will probably need to be reset to 'disabled'

Please let us know ALL security software currently installed (AV/Firewall/Ant-Malware apps and scanners etc.)
