windows 7 updates

I find that I'll need to reinstall windows 7 from the recovery disks on my HP computer.

Are the updates to windows stored some place so that I won't have to download them again. My Internet connection is hit and miss and it will take days to reinstall SP1 as well as all the other updates.

After a reinstall, you will have to update Windows 7, always. Effectively, a reinstall/format is like having a brand new OS, which will always have to be update with the current MS updates.

As to your internet connection; you could theoretically download all updates to DVD's from a friends computer that has a faster/stable connection and then install the updates from the DVD's.

Windows updates installers are stored in the folder "C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download". They should still be there unless you or your cleaner has deleted them. Only they are stored in folders with long string names. Renaming them with a .cab or .msu or .exe extension will make them reusable. But as you can see, this is a pretty tedious task, you'll have to do it for each update.

Not sure whether simply running windows updates will autodetect these downloaded updates if E.g. you back them up then copy them back to the new install. But worth giving a shot.

Thank you both for replying. Looks like a few days waiting for the updates is the best solution.

Kind of thought that's what I would have to do but it was worth a shot.

When you've done, why not create a system image as a full backup? That way, if you need to re-install just recover your system from the image you created - windows updates and all.

Unfortunately the drive image I made included the problem and I replaced the older drive image with the new without noticing the problem. DUH on me

I have issues with Catalyst Control Center and seems the real solution is a reinstall of the Drivers and software. Having read the solutions and problems with same on this and other forums I am planning for the worse case situation, that being CCC.exe and MOM.exe will still not start or not even install.

Lesson learned on being to quick to replace the older image.

Got lucky and the new software and drivers installed fine. Created a new backup drive image and I will create a second then alternate on replacing them.
