You can only do a factory restore if you have saved a backup from win 7. The restore partition contains vista restore files.

If you need to reinstall Win7, you don't have to restore Vista first.

In fact, you can consider wiping the HD to remove the Vista restore partition if you have no intention of returning to Vista, but first make the Recovery DIsks in case you ever want to restore Vista to sell the machine.

Here are the steps to reinstall Win7 with an Upgrade version without having Vista on the HD: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

Do you want to restore win7 (at some later time), the way you factory-restored vista? The factory restore is linked to oem installs that come with recovery partitions, and can be launched either from within windows or by pressing a key like F11 at boot.

Since you dont have a factory installed win7, its not possible to do a factory restore. But you can image the system drive with a free program like macrium reflect, then restore from the image. That way, you'll be back to the current state with the OS, drivers and apps already installed. Neither will any re-activation be required.

If you are looking to create a restore partition/disc for Windows 7, you can always create a system image through the built-in Windows 7 Backup utility. This will allow you to create a system image of the computer, thus being able to restore it at a later point in time. This would be very similar to a factory restore that you mentioned. I've done this with several Windows 7 PCs and it's worked great thus far, plus it doesn't take too much time to complete.

You can read more about creating a system image with the Windows 7 Backup utility here.

It isn't necessary to factory restore to Vista to reinstall Win7 Upgrade version. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

Your best bet is to save a Win7 backup image externally or to another HD, along with a set of your most recent User files. Then if OS won't start (seek help here first) or HD fails, you can reimage the OS in 15 minutes using your Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD, copy your latest files back in and you are back up and running in a half hour.
