Did you use the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor? If not do it now.

Did you download or buy a retail DVD to install windows?

Do you format, when given the choice of chose option Custom, upgrade or advanced?

If not, chose advanced then format. But make sure, very sure that you have a backup of your hard drive. You can use acronis or macrium reflex for the image. See if that works

On my upgrade disc there is no option to format. it asks which disc drive or partition.
Then starts the uprade
Ideally I want to put it on my 2nd drive (SATA) but I could not do it so I tried on C with same problems.

This is what I am doing

  1. On the Install Windows page, click Install now.
  2. On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation, and to help protect your computer against security threats. Your computer will need to be connected to the Internet during Windows 7 installation to get these updates.
  3. On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms, and then click Next.
  4. On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Custom.
  5. Choose the partition containing Windows XP which is C
  6. Then it starts doing the 'upgrade'

You need to boot from the DVD to get the Custom>Advanced drive tools to delete, create New and Format.

There can be problems running the installer from XP.

You will get a windows.old folder with your XP in it, but you need to back up your files when you do any install anway, so why not boot from the installer and get the cleanest possible install?

Boot from disc

When I boot from the disc it says loading files with status bar then goes to the starting winds screen and stays there

Hello and Welcome to Windows 7 support forum.
Your system is compatable with Windows 7 operating system.
Since you are coming from XP you will need to perform a custom install which will format your hard drive. A reminder to back up all essential files B4 you perform the installation is advised.
Insert your Windows 7 dvd into the drive and reboot and then when asked use the custom installation option and then the installation should begin.

As I said when I boot to the CD/DVD drive I get loading files..... then the starting windows screen with logo and it stays there.

If you look down the troubleshooting guide given above you will see steps to troubleshoot during install/setup.

If you are on Windows XP and planning to UPGRADE...

YOU MUST DO A CLEAN INSTALL. There is no upgrade path. There are user migration tools you can use, but you will need to backup your files and do a clean install.

I have seen several threads about this and just want to clarify. The upgrade from Windows Vista is a valid upgrade path, but Windows XP to Windows 7 is not

You can still use the Upgrade disk, you just can't do an in-place Upgrade from XP.

It wouldnt' let him choose Upgrade anyway if he is running it from XP, only Custom.

The solution is to boot and get the needed drivers into the installer, or get the BIOS settings right.

But first of all you need to know you have the latest BIOS version. Look at your System Information, or use Belarc Advisor to see what version you have and check it against latest version on Support Downloads page for your model.

To me, it doesn't matter what operating system you going to,. I always perform a "clean" install.

Some times I use GParted to get the Windows install partition yo around 60 GB,.
You can't shrink it that much in Windows.
