Hi everyone

I ran into something today I never seen before. I setup and sold a computer that I upgraded from vista to windows 7 by running upgrade option inside vista home premium to 7 home premium. Everything was working fine for 6 months. The customer brought it in my shop today and said the power went out and when they booted it back up it said winload.exe was missing or corrupt. I looked over the hard drive and everything on it is windows vista files and none of the user files are there and nothing that looks as 7 was ever installed. It's like it totally erased the windows 7 upgrade. Am I screwed and are the files lost?

Most probably you did not removed the OEM version in the computer.
So it was re-install to OEM version.

Just use the original Windows 7 to re-install.

Hi ACityComp.

Re-installing with a W7 ISO/USB will only partially work.
You wll need to follow your previous route using the Upgrade option, and use the product key from the upgrade media or the key you got from the MS store.
Otherwise the system will go Non genuine within 90 days.

I've not heard of a total system revert, you could try Recuva see if anything still there.

Btw.
What did the customer said and whether did the customer make an attempt to recover.
Refer to below on my situation.
I think you have to check on all the components on whether any changes made.
Most probably the customer may made an attempt to resolve by himself.
That is using the Windows Licence key under the Laptop to recover.
Hence, that could why it is all Vista and nothing on data.
You need to check and ask the customer to tell you properly. (I did told my seller what really happened.)
For a power went out is just like i always pull out the power connection.
It must be the same situation as mine, but my seller at least now he fix it properly, already 10 days.

Same scenario:
I bought a Laptop Sony Vaio with Win 7 Pro 64 bit.
The bottom said it is XP or maybe Vista, i forgot, because i may had damaged it.
This issue is that i use Mini Tools Partition Wizard CD to boot and make a clone.
After the clone, i did not check on the boot, active, system, etc.
Upon boot, it went straight to black & white (DOS mode style) and indicated as failed.
I sent back to the seller, and he mentioned that i may have damage somethings.
That was about 10 days ago, and until now i am still waiting.
It seem that there are problems on that laptop.
