Windows 7 Upgrade Troubles

I just recently decided it was time to upgrade to Windows 7 x64 from Windows Vista x64. I downloaded the RC1 from windows.com and burnt it to a CD using ImgTool, all of that went smooth. I run the setup and it asks me if I want to upgrade, so I choose Yes, since I don't feel like losing all of my documents and such just yet. So about an hour and a few restarts later, it is on the final step which involves copying about 400,000 files over which seemed to be the longest step. When it got to around 360,000 it came up with an error about "WerFault.exe" and it said something along the lines of "Error in line 0x000000, click OK to terminate program." that wasn't exactly what it said but it was similar. So I hit OK, and it pops up 2 more times for 2 other files that I forgot to write down. After I hit OK for the other 2 popups, about 10 seconds go by and then it says "Windows cannot complete the Upgrade. Your previous settings will now be restored." so I hit OK and it erases all of the changes it has made.


I am unsure of why it is doing this for me, could it be because I am trying to upgrade? Or whats the problem?

I do not clearly remember all things happenned when I upgraded mine.
But, I also got many error messages that almost frustrating me but not too screwed.
I don't know if this help you but tell you what I went through.

Before upgrading just do some of these,
- Try to uninstall some non essential program.
- Deactivate any antivirus and any firewall programs (comodo have stuck me before, but able to reconfigure it).
- Also see if you have daemon-Tools installed.
Just try to upgrade in a bit clean system environment.

Hope you will soon see the simpler and nicer Win 7 than your Vista.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I'll be sure to try some of these tomorrow when I'm not so tired, and yeah I'm hoping to soon be Vista free lol.

First off a welcome to the sevenforums! and some advice for you there. Since 7 is still not final and you have too much tied up into Vista at this point your best option would be to setup either a dual boot or see 7 go on a separate drive depending on what you are running there hopefully a desktop.

A clean install to a second partition or to another drive is strongly advised in order to see the best working results from the start. Even MS cautions about trying to set 7 up as the main OS while most here simply ignore that and run 7 anyways! (I know that one well! Besides I just dumped both XP and now Vista off one drive running it in a virtual pc!)

Hey and thanks for the welcome Night Hawk. I actually have a 2nd partition on my hard drive which is 160GB, how would I go about dual-booting with that?

When you start up the 7 installer by booting from the dvd you burned or another method like a usb key, mounting a virtual dvd drive, etc as the list goes on you would select the custom option. If you don't have a lot of clutter on the second partition where you have a good amount of free drive space 7 will go right on there.

Once the installation is finished Vista will be seen as an option on the 7 boot screen as well as the "previous versions of Windows" item at the top with 7 being default. The previous versions entry can be removed with the BCD edit tool since that option is for older Legacy versions as well as XP seen there.

During the installation up until everything completes on the 2 or 3 restarts the roll back option will be present until you enter the user name and password if you want that as well for the admin account. The EasyBCD tool unfortunately when used will remove the new 7 look by placing the Vista boot screen on 7 if you use that for editing the new BCD as well as changing the default OS to Vista if you decide to do that.

To forewarn you on that one I ended up trying out the upgrade repair install on one RC installation here when seeing that one. Hopefully the next version to come out will preserve the 7 splash screen. But you won't even need that to start with since the default OS can also be set in the boot tab of the system configuration option or simply put msconfig utility there too.
