how exactly does upgrade edition work compared to full edition?

All is speculation at this point, because Windows 7 hasn't been released.

I think they will be nearly the same. The only difference being the upgrade version requires you to own a previous version of Windows.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
how so. install over an old version or pop in an old cd?

I believe that this has been answered already, but it's ok.
The upgrade version requires the previous version (Vista in this case). So it can still do a full install, but you need to have your other disk. That is why it costs less.

The full version is for new systems, or if you are switching from, say, Linux.

hi impakt

Do you have an OS on the computer now vesides 7048? do you want to move to the new build in the prefered manner? thats called a clean install. for that you dont need to have an OS on the system but if you do you will have to re-install all of your other applications.

the other method. If you 7058 and want to move to 7100 or higher you can upgrade your current revision. But if there is anything wrong with your current version you will be importing into the new version

Does this help?

You just need the installation disk? The installation disk can easily be copied or forged. Do you guys have any hard facts? I looked all over MS site and couldn't find anything =(

UPGRADE is simply a method to :
1. buy that version CHEAPER
2. upgrade a previous version or CLEAN INSTALL
3. mostly it takes longer, but then all your installed programs and files remain intact.
4. How to clean install with UPGRADE Disk
a. follow all instructions except when ask to insert the KEY leave it blank.
read the popup carefully. continue
b. final is full operational and good for 30 days.
c. any time within 30 days insert your UPGRADE Disk click upgrade
and when ask insert the KEY you will then have
100% the same install as FULL Version. ONLY CHEAPER.
UPGRADE disks for Vista Ultimate.

You know, I don't know. I have heard only that you need the disk. I would imagine the key would be needed, but I would think that the disk would be sufficient.

you either need a full image (ISO) ore an upgrade image (ISO). they should be abt 2.5 gigs for 32 bit. Microsoft has them you need to go back and look again.

Then you don't even need a disc.

Guys your not looking very close if you can not find the UPGRADE Disks. PS: The biggest difference I have found in RETAIL-FULL and RETAIL-UPGRADE is the KEY... x86 and x64 KEYS are the same..
