Windows 7 will give boost to PC hardware

Windows 7 will be more than just a better interface. Under-the-hood changes will allow chips from Intel, Nvidia, and Advanced Micro Devices to ratchet up Windows 7 performance above previous Microsoft operating systems.
Microsoft on Wednesday said it has finalized the code for Windows 7, set to ship with new PCs starting October 22. Improvements will include how Windows handles multitasking, graphics acceleration, and solid-state drives.

Microsoft is working closely with Intel, whose chips will power the vast majority of PCs running Windows 7. A July 22 post from Joakim Lialias, Intel Alliance Manager for Microsoft, described how Microsoft and Intel "saw unique opportunities to optimize Windows 7 for Intel processor technology" in the areas of performance, power management, and graphics.

Thanks Dinesh, glad to know Intel are pleased with the OS especially as my machine is an Intel and I'll be putting Windows 7 onto it when my pre-order arrives

I can honestly say that putting Win7 RTM on my current system feels like having a whole new computer... and that's based on performance and not just the look of it vs my previous OS (XP).

Sumit Gupta, product manager for Nvidia's Tesla products, described GPGPU in some detail. "What that essentially means to consumers is, if your laptop has an Nvidia GPU or ATI GPU, it will run the operating system faster because the operating system will essentially see two processors in the system. For the first time, the operating system is going to see the GPU both as a graphics chip and as a compute engine," he said.

does that work with all modern GPU and is it automatically enabled?
I have an onboard Intel G45, so am I already using it?

I know Nvidia has that technology called.... aahhh GUPA.. or something .. forgot what it is called that enables BOINC to use the graphics card etc. but that only is in selected graphicscards.

I read the future Photoshop is supposed to use the GPU too. Yes it really would be good to use that expensive graphics card. I have onboard graphic, but I'm sure it has some power if I could use it. If I knew it is useful for my daily life I'd even install a $ 80 graphics card or so.

Edit; it is Nvidia CUDA I'm referring to. Is that what W7 supports? So do I need one of the Nvidia cards then? Or does AMD have something similar? Probably only in high end cards. damn.
