Windows 7 Will Kill XP

Slowly, but surely

It will be Windows 7 to do the job Windows Vista failed at, namely to kill Windows XP. However, killing XP is a process rather than a single moment in time. Windows 7 will first erode XP’s market share and convert its audience. As XP’s usage rate will drop, less and less hardware manufacturers and software developers will offer support and compatibility of the latest versions of their products for the operating system Microsoft released in 2001. It will be Microsoft to hammer down the last nail in the XP coffin in 2014, when it will cut extended support for the platform entirely. At that time, users still running XP will be left to fend for themselves with no more updates, no more security patches, no more support.

A recent study from Gartner predicts that no less than 75% of corporate PCs will be running a 64-bit version of Windows by 2014 (via DailyTech). Such a scenario automatically implies that enterprises are now ready, and increasingly so, to discard Windows XP and 32-bit machines, for Windows 7 running on new 64-bit architectures which can take advantage of in excess of 4 GB of RAM.

i dont know i about that.... i know it took me a while to worm up to windows 7 after the failure vista has....i still have my pc at home running xp....if and that a big if i put windows 7 on my pc at home i will allways keep copies of windows xp....they will become handy one day

It's hard for me to look back on XP fairly, because my old XP machine had a 1.63Ghz processor and 512MB of RAM. Now I am running a dual-core processor @3.924Ghz, with 64-bit 7 Ultimate and 4GB RAM.....a slight bump in capability.

I still think it's fair to say that I like 7 better though, even taking into account that I've barely scratched the surface of what I can do with it. I think it may cause my score on that Internet addiction test to turn for the worse, too.

xp has been dead since build 7000 of win 7 in our household lol!

For me, XP was dead the day I went to Vista and didn't get the same unexplained freezing and crashing I had with XP, though I still didn't mind XP, but Windows 7 was the final blow.

I hope a lot of XP users do try 7 and do prefer it. It is starting to become time to upgrade, and I think Windows 7 is the OS to go to, even if you have a PC that's running fine with XP.

only problem i have with 7 is the weird sleep bug i got..... where you put it to sleep, sometimes it just does not want to wake up, and the backup doesn't work either

I sure hope so!, I loved XP when it came out in 2001 (8 years ago!!) That's almost a decade!
To me Windows 7 is the next Windows XP it is here to stay...

I wouldn't compare 7 to XP from personal experience of watching the older version there crash quite frequently and lock up solid often to hard boot. When Vista came along it proved itself to be far more stable and saw a much needed improvement in regaining the desktop as well as being more secure.

By the time the RCs were on here it was time to say "Good Bye XP!" once and for all. I still have a pair of XP builds to salvage however. One will be set up for student use without any internet access and another will see all hardwares upgraded to run 7 Home Premium there.

The second out of those two was a newer build with Vista updates available while a new board with USB 3.0 support will be looked at. The retail Home Premium was a gift for a family member!

While I will be glad to see Windows 7 killing off XP, I don't want Windows 7 to become another XP. Windows 8 should be designed keeping that in mind.

I don't think anyone wants 7 to become another one of those! At this point that would be highly doubtful to start since MS seems to be finally headed in the right direction. As a company they had to learn a few things from their customer base first in order to start making real progress!

I think that, when people compare Windows 7 with Windows XP, they think about the improvement that came after Win2k and a standard WinXP set over the years. I do think of it like that as well... Windows 7 is charging to be the next standard in PC operating systems. Just imagine, in 5-6 years when we get another version of Windows, it may once again be the case: Windows 7 is a standard in operating systems, Windows 8 is the new visual candy and new features, enhancements etc.
I'm only looking at the bright side of the OS revolution that happened in 2001, and the failed one that should have been with the release of Vista. There is not a single person on this earth that can deny that Vista was like a nuclear explosion of better visuals, new features and much MUCH more compared to XP, even with all it's downsides.
Looking at it in that way, I do hope that Windows 7 will become like XP. Besides, 7 has already proved to be much more safe, stable, reliable, easy to use etc. than XP so in that way it can never become another XP (at least I hope).

Microsoft really started to listen to it's customers and is trying it's best to deliver high quality products to our homes and businesses, and Windows 7 WILL prove to be a great blow to any other operating system, both from Microsoft and Apple, even Linux. At least I see it like that.

Good article, I just find it funny that some people are still running Windows 2000 and won't even move on to Windows XP! Windows 7 is the future though...

Me, I dumped XP about a week after installing Windows Vista x64, which I got a month or so after it's official release.

If MS has reallly learned the lessons well from the ME flop and dissatisfaction many had with Vista you may be surprized later in 2012 with W8 being even more of a leap in some ways. Don't forget MS fell behind the advances in hardwares in the last several years considering the delays in Vista's eventual release about 2-3yrs. late?

Comparing XP to Vista is like comparing 95 to 98 with 98 having been the larger OS there in several ways with 98 initially seen as the slower version. 7 on the other hand when compared to the last versions is a large swing in a totally different direction then simply being a more flavored and glamourous appeal by being more of a performance hound! while becoming more user friendly at the same time as well as seeing the new features you would expect in each new version.

"Ok MS, thumbs up for 7! Now let's see what you can do over the next couple of years and ...! "

Coincidentally:
- XP support had stopped this year (only extended support till 2014)
- XP is 8 years old
- due to Vista many people held onto their old OS for longer than needed, making many OS overdue to be replaced

MS contributed:
- W7 runs on same hardware as XP (unlike Vista)
- 8 years of progress
- much of modern hardware (SSD TRIM etc.), or even direct X 10 or 11 not supported in XP

what gets forgotten to mention, Vista will be killed by W7 too, probably sooner. XP may survive on some old hardware. I myself have a W7 desktop, a W7 laptop to use. And an XP laptop with broken display. since I'm too cheap to buy a new display I use it as my mediacenter to watch Netflix isntantly int he living room and for Karaoke, and use my TV as monitor. but if I did any actual work and I fixed the display, I'd switch to W7.

so it is a no-brainer for XP to die... when windows 8 comes out in 2012 or 2013 we will hear the same "news". I think W2000 extended support ends in 2010. This for sure will flash them out. On the other hand some people still have W98 (for some reason everyone with ME has switched already

If MS really stick to a 3 year OS replacement plan and offers support/extended support for 5/10 years only (for home versions only 5 years at all), then XP will be the longest living OS ever. Everything else just will be too shortlived due to new replacements.

Don't be surprized if Vista hangs on a bit longer then many think there by the way. In fact some running Vista now finding it more to their liking over what XP are somewhat reluctant to consider upgrading to 7! Vista is presently working for them the way it is.

Typically these are people not looking at things like frame rates and benchmarks in pc games but are perhaps using MS Office products or running only a few programs and the average check the mail and web surfing seen there. Those looking for how a version handles and things like usability are already going with 7 on the other hand.

In many vendor sites however you still see new prebuilds with Vista on them with some showing 7 upgradability. The novice first time buyer or those who lack experience in upgrades will look more at prices then the present OS installed.

To add many people wrote off Vista when it first came out...and for good reason as it was pretty bad...

Now with Vista on SP2...it is not only a viable system but a perfectly runnable one at that. Also think back to 2001 (a bit ago) and remember that XP wasn't the "so-called" perfect OS it is today: XP was rather horrible pre-SP2. Even if 7 is an improvement over Vista...that doesn't mean Vista isn't viable.

...and while I am stating facts here...7 is the only OS from the get-go that isn't in need of a SP1. The days of deployment post-SP1 is over: 7 is a great step forward.
