Windows 7 will not Boot...

I have windows seven ultimate. I get to start up screen, the windows logo starts to pop up and all that comes is one red dot where the red flag on the upper right part of the windows logo. THEN MY COMPUTER FREEZES. it's new to me, used though. I've gotten it to start a few times, did my updates and when i come back to it the next day this happens. Any ideas or help?

does it start in safemode? have you tried booting with the bare minimum of hardware eg one stick of ram , one hard drive , remove all usb devices including keyboard mouse , try swapping out ramsticks too , one of them may be faulty

by swapping out ramsticks i mean if your pc has more than one stick or ram installed remove all but one if its still crashing try a differant stick.
