Windows 7 will not boot

Hi everyone!

Windows 7 will not boot. My Toshiba dd not come with the installtion CD. System repair did not work. After it finished loading the screen turned blank. I tried system recovery and it did not start. After system recovery failed I tried to load the computer again, but now it is stating there is no bootable device.

I had this same problem last month. The way I got it to work was allowing system recovery to stay on all night and the only difference was that the screen did not go blank during system recovery.

A Toshiba representative thinks the problem is with the harddrive, but this computer is only 7 months old. I have only used 40 GB on this computer and that is mostly two video games that I am making. He said the problem could be turning off the computer with the power button instead of pushing shutoff, but that is not the case. I almost always push system shutoff.

Toshiba wants me to send in my computer, but I have very important files I need to backup. Can someone please help me?

You can backup your files before sending the computer back to Toshiba. There are a couple ways to do this.

1. Mount the drive in another computer and copy your data to a flash drive or burn to CD/DVD.
2. Use a Live (bootable) Linux CD like Puppy Linux or Xubuntu, boot it from CD and then copy your data to a flash drive or burn to CD/DVD.

You should look into getting an external hard drive and use it to backup your data or even better, make an image backup (and keep it current) of the entire system so when this happens in the future you won't have to worry about your data.

How do I mount the driver into another computer? I do have an external harddrive but the backup data is not up to date.

Using the method theog linked, you can copy out your files using the Win7 Repair CD.

While booted in the Repair CD try also running Startup Repair up to 3 separate times as it may need to be run repeatedly to repair the MBR. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html?ltr=S

If it fails then try one other thing: using Repair CD Command Line mark Win7 partition active and then run Startup Repair again x3: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71432-partition-mark-active.html

In the rare case where you can't copy files out using the Repair CD and the method theog links, download and burn to CD free Paragon Rescue CD to try to recover the Win7 partition, and if this fails then copy the files out using it.

If you have five months left on your tech support and hardware warranty, I would keep pressing them to get it fixed or else RMA the machine for another one.
