I'm running an in-home Win 7 64 bit system and have a wireless connection that is working. Wired connection was also working until the last month or so when it gave me the "Connection failed with error 651" error.

I tired all of the many methods listed here: 8 Ways To Fix The Connection Failed With Error 651 - TrulyGeeky

The last method was replacing the RASPPPSE.SYS but when I looked in Windows/system32/drivers there was no RASPPPSE.SYS so I downloaded a copy and put it in the directroy and rebooted but that did not fix the issue either.

thanks for you help.

Based on the suggested fixes and what you have tried, I suspect its going to take a "clean" reinstall of Win 7. I don't like to give up on a problem, but the "8 ways to fix the connection" covers every suggestion I could find, except the clean reinstall.

It may be that you have a conflict between the wireless and wired network in the router. Try disabling the wireless network adapter in the device manager then restart the computer and try. It is worth testing before a reinstallation.
Maybe even to reset the router to default and only connect the faulting computer's wired network into the router

How are you connecting to a modem or router? The error is for a pppoe connection not a normal ipv4 network connection. From a cmd prompt type

ipconfig /all

then post results

That must have been it as when I disabled the wifi in devices then it connecte by wired ethernet. So how do I reset the wireless so there is not conflict?

Hi jamesldavis,

You could try deleting the wireless network adapter(s) out of Device Manager and then rebooting!

I hope this helps!
