Hi guys here is another hapless person looking for some help.

I took a notion to try windows 7.

So I installed ultimate x64 to see what it was like.

SO I quite like it, except that it runs slower than xp.

I guess that is because my system is so old.

I don't have any need for a real fast system but I would like some more ram, that is why I wanted to try x64.

I do a little photoshop and two or three tabs open in google and a couple of pics open and your 2gb is gone.

So really what I am after is some advice on something I could do to this set up to make it passable, or a budget update.

Hope you can help.

Alex

Let's find out if your friend might have involved you unknowingly in criminal activity with a bootleg copy of Ultimate. It's rare a consumer needs the top-end version which is pretty expensive to be handing out like that.

Please run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

I doubt whether your friend installed a $200 Ultimate builder's retail OEM copy on your laptop, and it couldn't be factory OEM unless it came preinstalled with that version. So I'd guess he's installed an illegal bootleg on your laptop. This will be confirmed by our Genuine Windows expert as soon as he comes online.

If I were you I'd reinstall XP or buy a legal copy of Win7.

Well, if it's a hookey copy then that is an easy fix. But I am not doing anything until I am sure.

So until an expert tells us whether it's legal or not. Is it likely that being illegal would make it run slow.?

2 GB ram is the absolute minimum required for smooth Windows 7 64-bit experience according to Microsoft. Your system is only using 1 stick of 2 GB DDR2 hence your system will be on the slow side. Windows 7 64-bit generally occupies 1.2 GB of RAM alone. Keep in mind that when you use your browser (Chrome/Chromium is the most memory hog in my experience), it will use around 400 or more MB with a couple of tabs thus making Windows use a lot of pagefile writing which slows your PC down to a crawl. Adding another 2 GB of the same RAM should improve your performance considerably.

It's got two 1 gb sticks, which I could change out to two 2gb sticks.

This is the max my motherboard can take, hence my desire for x64, so that I could use it all.

My motherboard was designed for xp and vista not 7.

But I don't use the pc enough to justify a big upgrade

So apart from concluding that the software is ropey and going back to xp, is there any other suggestions.?

Could I download this, try it for 30 days and if it's better pay for a key, or if it's no better then go back to xp.?

My understanding is. Your system is a 2006. Windows didn't come out untill 2009. So with a OEM/SLP will not be a legal install. Don't worry Noel will spank me if I'm wrong.

Didn't XP come with the PC? I'd reinstall it until you decide to buy Win7. Because there's a possibility a bootleg copy has something added, I'd also wipe the HD using DBAN before reinstaling XP.
