I have two pc's running Windows 7 Home premium. I want to share xp style with the other one. I have a modem connected to router, then both pcs plugged into ports on back of router. I look at the Network map, it shows the two pcs, switch, gateway, internet. What is this switch? Is there a way to remove it. It hoses my internet connection everytime I reboot, it has to identify the network. I am baffled by this switch. I never had such issues with xp.

I suspect you have IPv6 enabled, disable it in network and sharing.

I also think you are using homegroup. Workgroup is easier to work with

Let me know

The switch is the hub portion of your router.

Follow zigzag's lead.

Looks like I belong to a homegroup also. Think I will try leaving it. BRB

The Switch is the Router. Consumer Routers are a combination of a Switch and Router. But they are treated independently.

There is no tcp/ipv6 nor homegroup. Is it normal to isdentify network for several minutes? It gets the little circle, then it gets an exclamation mark before conncting. Xp seemed to connect almost immediately. I still can't get sharing working either. Very frustrating. This has been monopolizing all of my days for the past three days.

Is UPnP enabled on your router? Disabling that may make it stop showing up in windows.

One thing I would check is that the Router is running the latest firmware especially on an older device.

The changes made to the network stack with Vista caused issues with some routers.

Most manufacturers have now update firmware available that is Vista compatible which may improve your situation
