Windows 7 woes

I am not really sure where to post this, but my .dmp files are pointing to a driver issue, so this is probably as good a place to start as any.


Approx 3 months ago, I purchased the hardware to build a new system, and did my homework first to make sure it would all be compatible. I got all the hardware from the same retailer, got it home, installed everything, and had no issues. I was up and running with windows 7 home premium 32 bit in no time.


A week and a half ago, I was in the middle of playing World of Warcraft, after installing SP1 and other updates, when I started getting BSOD errors from windows. They have all been KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR referencing quite a few different things.


So I did a fresh install of win 7, completely re making and formatting my OS and programs partitions using another OS on another drive to do a long format. I installed everything up to the latest win 7 updates and SP1, my video card drivers, chipset drivers, lan drivers, and onboard audio drivers.


I was playing wow again for approx 45 minutes, when I got another BSOD. So I rebooted my PC, and ran memtest86 v 4.0 for 6 passes.

The other 5 passes came back with zero errors, which kind of leads me to a problem with the Bios config. Not at a point where I want to flash it yet though.


Prime95 v 25.11 ran 62 torture tests and came back with zero errors zero warnings.


So the problem is that whenever I am playing wow (haven't had it happen with other games yet) at anytime during normal play on medium settings, I get a BSOD. No other activities have produced a BSOD yet on my system, and I have had zero boot issues or functionality issues as of yet. Most everything is running as usual, no temp increases, performance issues, or failures.

Here's my system info:

- Windows 7 home premium 32 bit

- Installed as an original retail version on a new hard drive when I built my system.

- The hardware is approx 3 months old.

- The OS has been re installed twice since I started getting BSOD. However, up to that point it was a fresh install. I just re formatted and partitioned the drive yesterday and did a clean install.

Update: I carefully flashed the Bios with the latest Rom I downloaded from Asus, and that seems to have eliminated the BSOD errors. Since then I received two Stop screens, but no .dmp files were created.

So I went in and downloaded the latest current drivers release for my video card, installed them, and made sure World of warcraft is set to use DX11. They recently patched it (about the time I started getting BSOD) and updated the API to use DX11. This whole week I was using DX9 in wow and I think that it was having compatibility issues with windows 7 and SP1.


So far everything seems good, though I received a warning message from windows asking me to disable Aero Plate because there weren't enough resources for it (which is odd) shortly after wow hung for about 30 seconds.

Ok, so all is good so far, no more BSOD or stop screen errors. Now, whenever I play wow, it hangs periodically for up to a minute. During this time I can open the task manager or win+r and it will tab out of wow.

I have no idea where to start with this one, all my drivers for everything are up to date now, and I have cleaned out any old drivers I may have had. I have also replaced the Sata cable with a new one, and made sure the sata controllers are installed correctly.


Stumped...

Ok, so after 2 weeks of dealing with dysfunctional windows, doing everything from reformatting partitions, remaking partitions, fresh OS installs, complete driver updates, hardware tests, and just about everything you can do, I had absolutely zero luck getting my computer to be stable during games. So I took my hard drive, and wiped it clean. All of it. I completely reformatted the entire thing and started from scratch with partitions and an OS install. From there I installed the drivers that came with my motherboard, as well as the ones that came with my video card. Since then, I have had zero issues with my computer, everything is running as new. I have installed and tested several games, without any issues, and better performance than previous. It's been about 24 hours since I wiped everything to start over, and my computer is finally stable. A few things I have noticed: 1. Windows 7 has troubles with partitioning a drive for a re install. Despite using Win 7 formatting/partition tool to completely wipe a partition, I could not get windows to do a clean install on the drive. Each time it would go to reboot after installing the features/updates, and something would be missing. 2. Windows updates and service pack one are more trouble than they are worth. I am sure for those of you who went out and bought a dell or some other prefab computer, updating and installing SP1 works fine and dandy. However, for those of us who have custom built machines for gaming/entertainment, we might do much better avoiding these updates and service packs. I know that I will be. I didn't have a single issue until I installed SP1, and I won't be installing it again any time soon.
