windows 7 won't boot after update

Installed large amount of windows updates yesterday
Restarted computer and windows hangs at the blue background of the login screen (mouse visible and responsive but everything at low resolution)

Pop in windows repair disk, hangs at same place
F8 doesn't work
I try Sony recovery disk which allows me to access the f8 options
Safe mode does not work, just gives black screen
I try sony recovery center and that hangs with a blank teal screen and responsive mouse

Acronis home 2010 boot disk works and I am now backing up my files. ( unfortunately don't have a recent system image, stupid me)

Any way I can fix windows or access windows system restore?

Hello and welcome rage. Mat if you have access to another machine make a bootable Ubuntu disk and set the BIOS to the optical and boot the Ubuntu OS use the TRY version not the install.

Once in Ubuntu you will have access to any drive in the machine and can save to an external your data.

If the problem persists do a clean install of Windows using this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html just use the activation code for the sticker on the machine. B e careful though which version you choose from th list it must be the same as there was on there before and avoid any that have an "N" against them - no WMP.
