Windows 7 wont boot

I have a Dell Studio 1558 laptop on Windows 7. Yesterday it just turned itself off (maybe from a virus?) and now when I turn it on it will not boot properly. It goes to startp repair which can't fix the problem, and I've tried both restoring to several earlier dates and starting in safe mode, which haven't worked either. I've tried everything I know so now I'm completely stuck. Help anyone?

How far does it get into the process of booting? (ie reboots before or after pulsing flag)

ah. Does the hard drive make any odd noises?

Can't really say it makes any odd noises. I've used the command chkdsk as well and it says that its fine, then I use startup repair which then says it has detected no problems, but then when I restart it doesn't boot and startup repair says that there is a problem but it can't fix it.

Are you able to boot into a Linux live CD? If so, I recommend you try to backup all your documents to external media with it.
I'll keep trying to think what's causing it :/

I used Dell Emergency Backup so my documents should be safe.

That's a relief. I'm guessing that reinstalling Windows would be a last resort?

Yeah, I'd prefer not to and I can't find the disc anywhere. I'm not even sure it shipped with one. Of course if that's what it takes then I'll have to.

Can you boot into Safe Mode to run a full Malwarebytes scan?

If not try a bootable AV scan: FREE Bootable AntiVirus Rescue CDs Download List

Run Startup Repair from Repair CD which doesn't depend on System Files to run.

Startup Repair should automate System Restore and System File Checker, but run them separately anyway from System Recovery Options.
