Windows 7 Wont Restart

Hi everyone, this is my first post.

First of all sorry for my bad english, actually I'm argentinean and spanish is my first language.

Im having this problem. I cannot restart my computer. I go to Start > Restart, it shuts down but it doesnt do anything else, i just get a black screen (as if it is suspended). So I have to press the button to shut it down and then press it again to turn it on.

Hope someone knows how to fix this.

If you didn't say Spanish was your first language I would have thought you are a native English speaker. Your English is great!

This is one of those problems where it could be software related (perhaps some damaged or corrupt system files), hardware related (perhaps a hard drive is failing), or malware related.

If this problem recently started you may be able to roll back your computer to a date/time before the problem first appeared by using a system restore point.

You could also see if the problem occurs in Safe Mode (accessed through Advanced Boot Options).

Starting with the easiest first, run a full scan with your anti-virus suite. Then run each of these on-demand scanners (all free.) No anti-malware program is going to be 100% effective 100% of the time so extra scans increases the possibility of detecting malware. Do one scan at a time and post back with details if any malware is found.

If no malware is found check for damaged system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot your computer after each scan.

You could also try running Startup Repair. Run it 3 times no matter what it reports, and restart the computer after each scan.

If none of this helps, you might want to follow the instructions for posting BSOD information. You'll have to set up your computer to create dump files and then post those files here. Even though you're not getting a Blue Screen Of Death, the information in the dump file could help figure out what is causing the restart problem. Don't start a separate BSOD thread, just post the files here.

First of all thanks for the reply.

Im pretty sure is not a Virus + Malware issue because I've just format my hard drive (I had a problem with Windows 8. A Video file crashed and i had to reinstall windows 7).

So my computer is pretty clean.

I wanted to avoid a system restore point cause that usually uninstall some programs you may have installed (Ive installed pretty big software such as Visual Studio). On the other hand, I've installed windows 7 yesterday and as soon as I installed it the problem showed up. So I dont know which point I should restore my System to.

Im going to check the Safe Mode Step and Startup Repair in order to solve it.
If these 2 things dont work, I will try to post dump files as you mentioned.

Take your time. I'll keep watching this thread. Which video file crashed? Any possibility you have a bad graphics driver? A dump file might be able to show that.

I didnt take note of the Video File's Name. Should have done that.
My Windows 7 was working pretty well before upgrading to Windows 8.
And I dont think a dump file would show that because it was before formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows 7. So it is a lost file.

I dont know if I should install other graphic drivers after upgrading my SO to Windows 8. I will focus on that when I resolve this Restarting Issue.

Hello ! Im back again.
It seems I've solved the issues doing a Reset of the BIOS.

By the way just to let you know (or anyone who checks this post) I tried to Restart in Safe Mode and I couldnt. About Startup Repair wasnt able to do it because I didnt have my Windows 7 DVD.

I will update this post if the problem shows up again.

Make sure you also follow the recommended practices for dealing with drivers, and if you'll stick with only the tools and methods in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 you will get and maintain a perfect install.
